Why I’m hooked & my sad little 2009 lists

As you might know I’m doing this blog since the end of October of this year (the 26th to be precise). And I’ve gotta admit, in those two months my life’s changed.

Now at the end of the year I see all those enthusiastic bloggers lists of best this and worst thats, or some resolutions for 2010. Well, the resolutions thing I can do, but I’m saving that for the New Year. The looking back on 2009 is more difficult though, since I haven’t been around for the whole year. I have been reading erotic romance for only 6 months now…

But since it’s my first turn of the year in bloglandia I just wanna give it a try! I warn you though that my lists might turn out to be sad little ones ;)

Before I start the listing, I wanna say that I’m super duper happy that I started the blogging thing in October – I’m completely hooked! It’s not only because I found a perfect outlet for my pent up desires and longings (the man candy and hot vids and pics serve that purpose very well *grin*) but what got me really addicted to the blogging is meeting all you nice people and the lovely, wonderful comments and emails I received from you! Author Bronwyn Green wrote to me yesterday about my blog “the vibe is awesome. It's like it's a nice people magnet.” And that’s what got me hooked, really! Thanks you all, for being so wonderful and welcoming me into romblogland!

Now, let’s see if I can stir up the sleepy grey cells that are called my brain and come up with some wonderful rom-reading memories…

Todays Man Candy, End of the Year Giveaway & What I Found in My Mailbox

I had such an amazing day yesterday! It seems that I have a lot of those wonderful days since I started my blog! Therefore I just can’t help myself, I really feel like sharing this with you! And what better way to begin than with sharing one of my delicious hunks…

But keep on reading because at the end of this post I’m gonna give away an ebook!

Okay, now to the other good stuff.
First thing that made me smile was the mailman… delivering my new toy: the Sony Touch (PRS 600)! Yay! I instantly fell in love, not with the mailman but with the ereader of course. After some initial struggle with downloading the software it was really easy to transfer all my ebooks to the Sony. Well, I didn’t transfer them all at once, because that would’ve taken too much time and I wanted to start reading quickly. But I will get to that.
I’ve almost finished my first book reading with the ereader. I must admit that I have to get used to the screen, ‘cause it’s darker or more grey than the average paperback page and it doesn’t give light like my laptop. But it feels really comfortable holding it and it fits in my purse, so now I can take my ebooks everywhere!!

Second thing that made my day was a visit from author Mia Watts to my blog! And the most amazing thing was, she brought a lot of her friends with her who left the nicests of comments on my post Mia Watts totally surprised me! What are your experiences with authors?
Mia posted a link to that post on some of her author loops at Yahoo. It was the first time I ever heard about it… yeah yeah, call me silly for not having a clue about Yahoo… ;)
And now Mia tempted me to join by writing “Janna, I'll hold your hand into the yahoo room. C'mon, babe, you can do it! Free excerpts and inside info on contests, sales, plus socialization with authors and other readers.”
See? How can I resist that!? I signed in and will go take a look later. Are any of you familiar with or members of a Yahoo group? I mean, am I the only one who didn’t know about them?

The third wonderful present that I got yesterday was two of Mia’s writer friends emailing me directly, chatting with me and sending me a copy of their books! One of them is Bronwyn Green, who emailed me Cuffed and Dangerous. The other one Jambrea Jo Jones who sent me Magnus! Maybe some of you remember my post last month in which I blabbered about my soft spots… The hot looking Magnus was one of them!
I can’t tell you how thankful I am for these wonderful writers being so generous! You can imagine that this made me feel special and very happy!

The good thing is that I can let you share in the presents! Because Bronwyn Green sent me two copies of her ebook Cuffed and Dangerous *cough* 1 extra by accident *cough* and she wrote me that I could give away one of them to a random commenter! Isn’t that great? Thanks so much Bronwyn!

A Handcuffs and Lace Tale

Mondays Hot Couple and Warriors Cross

I’m having a fruit & juice day today – a necessary thing after all the copious meals we shared with family and friends the past couple of days. But gosh, it makes me cranky!

Good thing it’s time for Monday’s Hot Couple :) And since I didn’t post my Friday’s Happy Gay Couple because of Christmas I’ll add that one too. Maybe they can make me forget about my empty stomach and the whooshy feeling in my head…

The plan is to live on fruit & juice until Wednesday but I already doubt my own intention… Especially since I wanted to do one of those looking-back-on¬-my-2009-reads posts. But we’ll see how things go. Because I also have a few reviews to finish and if the tummy noises are getting too loud to do that I’ll just have to eat for my blog’s sake ;)

There’s at least one thing I want to share today: I finished early this morning one of the best M/M romances I’ve read this year. It’s Warrior’s Cross by Madeleine Urban & Abigail Roux. And the surprising thing is that there weren't that many sex scenes in this book, it was just plotted and written very well, which made it exciting and hot! It’s a character driven story, the heroes are three dimensional, lifelike characters & I loved them! It was really very hard to put Warrior’s Cross down, I highly recommend it!
Have a Happy Monday!

Merry Christmas!

Look what I found in my X-mas stocking!! Must have been a good girl *wink*
I'm spending the two days of Christmas (yes, in Holland we have two days, December 25th and 26th) the first day with my family over at my aunts house and the second day with my hubby's family at my PIL's place.
So not much of reading or computer time for me the couple of days...
And this Christmas Eve I spent preparing: gift wrapping, polishing my nails, dying my hair, shaving the other hairy parts, picking my X-mas clothes, that sort of girly things. Just getting in the mood for some quality time... I hope you're having a great time too!
I wish you all a wonderful and loving Christmas with lots of memorable warm moments and being surrounded by your dearest loved ones!!
Merry Christmas everyone!!

Mia Watts totally surprised me! What are your experiences with authors?

The most amazing thing happened to me Tuesday morning! When I opened my mailbox I found an email from author Mia Watts. Attached was her latest novel and a message that said: “couldn't resist. :) Enjoy Faery Surprising... on me.”

Monday I'd joined the contest for this book on Chris’ blog by leaving a comment, but no winner was announced yet, so I was a bit confused and I mailed Ms. Watts.

In another email she let me know that she’d sent it to me because: ” You hit a soft spot with me in the "I just discovered Mia Watts" bit. LOL. Made me grin so I went over to your site and loved it. :) I think I'm going to be over there drooling quite a bit.”

Can you image how wonderful that felt? Isn’t she the sweetest, giving me an ebook because of that? I’m looking forward to reading it, the opening was hilarious…

So far, I’ve only met really nice authors and all my experiences are very positive. Some of them leave kind comments on my blog or drop polite emails in my inbox.

How is that for you? Have you ever experienced something like the above or something similar? Or do you have other, more negative experiences?

Back Blurb Faery Surprising:
Book Two in the Faerily Imperfect Series

Flora Harper isn't amused when her faery "gift" transports her in the middle of a self-induced orgasm to a professional football locker room after practice. The fact that it's the team she works for, and their new quarterback, Ian Tate, wants to finish what she's started, flies in the face of the non-fraternization policy.
Ian has been traded to a rival city so he catch a blackmailer red-handed. Time is against him, as are the number of injuries he's had in his career. It sounds like a great deal, except filming the Public Relations specialist in a sexually compromising position leaves a sour taste in his mouth. When he discovers that the PR person is emotionally distant, hard-on inducing Flora, getting a whole lot closer to her feels so incredibly right… until she finds out why he's really on the team.

Short Review of Nothing But Trouble by Jenna Byrnes

Jenna Byrnes
Nothing but Trouble
Phaze Books, July 2009 (revised edition)

Genre & Keywords
: Gay, M/M, Age Difference

Rating: êêê½
Heat level:
¹¹

The Back Blurb:
Adrian Scott doesn't expect to fall in love with his employer after spending one night with him. Graham Elliott is handsome and exciting, a very wealthy man, not in Adrian 's league. But their night together was intoxicating, and Adrian can’t shake the thought of making a life with this older man. As per their arrangement, they have two more nights together. Will that be enough time to convince his boss they belong together, or will the deal prove to be nothing but trouble?

NB: I won my copy of this book at Jenna Byrnes’ blog. She didn’t ask me to write a review or pay me to say something positive about it ;)

Nothing but Trouble is a short, hot read about a sexy young gay man and his older -still very much in the closet- wealthy boss. The opening of the story is strong and spiked my interest immediately.

“I want you to spend the night with me. I’ll pay you ten thousand dollars.”
Adrian Scott blinked, wondering if his employer was serious. He’d never heard of such an offer, except in the movies. “Excuse me?”

The movies indeed, you could say that this story is a M/M variant of Pretty Woman. My first thought was “What kind of man asks something like that?” but I was willing to give Graham the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was secretly in love with Adrian for ages and this was his way of making contact. But that didn’t turn out to be the case: the offer was meant to be a one night stand and had to be kept a secret.
After Adrian does a counteroffer to make it three nights and the guys have the best sex of their lives, Graham doesn’t change his mind: it was intended to be temporarily and it should stay that way. I admit that this attitude made it very hard for me to like Graham. A man of his age and wealth should have been able to admit that he is gay a long time ago. But I also have to say, this type of starting point provides a great way to bring a couple together for some hot sex very quickly, which is a good thing in a short story like this. And at the end Graham turns out to be a very nice guy when more of his human side is shown in his contact with Adrian’s mother.

Adrian on the other hand is a doll from the beginning. He’s really easy to love and the way he behaves, like a lovesick puppy at times, is totally sweet and endearing. I can easily forgive him that he seems to be mistaking lust for love when he declares his love to Graham very early in their relationship. But this behavior seems to suit him, being the open and warm guy that he is.

As a couple I completely fell for Graham and Adrian. Ms. Byrnes does a great job in describing them and explaining their attraction and emotions. They feel real and it’s not only physical between the two men but the emotional storyline is also well developed. Together they are very, very hot. I was treated to a nice amount of sexy and scorching love scenes that left me panting a little and reaching for Mr. ErotRomReader a few times. Nothing but Trouble was meeting my needs and coming up to my expectations completely when it comes to the erotic aspect of the story.

The romance part however felt a little bit rushed, but that seems inevitable with this short length of stories (ca. 40 pages). Not only came Adrian’s declaration of love very quickly and way too early in the relationship, Graham’s switch in feelings towards the end could have drawn out and explained just a little bit more as well. But then it wouldn’t have been a short story anymore. And nevertheless, it’s a rounded story because Ms Byrnes knows how to tell a well plotted, fast paced story! And part of the attraction of Nothing but Trouble is that it’s a fast, hot read that you can devour in less than an hour. Sexy enjoyment guaranteed!

And for those who can’t get enough of Graham and Adrian there’s also Valentine’s Trouble, a very short free story (5 pages) in which we get another glimpse of the sweet couple after they’ve been together for a while. I liked this quickie as well because it’s nice to know how the guys were doing and to be treated to another hot steamy scene!

Mondays Hot Couple

I few more days of working and than I'll be free until January 4th, Yay!
I'm going to spend a lot of time with family and friends but there will definitely be a lot of time to read too! I'm looking forward to that.
And I hope to find some inner calm and quietness to come up with some reading lists for my 2010 reading challenges!
I love this time of the year where there's lot of opportunity to look back, reflect, close things, leave them behind you and look forward to a brand new year stuffed with new and unknown things and people. I can't wait for this week of silent contemplation to start... just a few more days!

Review of Gobsmacked by L.B. Gregg

L.B. Gregg
Gobsmacked (Men of Smithfield, #1)
Aspen Mountain Press, February 2009

Genre & Keywords
: Gay, M/M, One Hot Cop, Betrayal

Rating: êêêê½
Heat level:
¹¹½

The Back Blurb:
No more Mr. Nice Guy.
Mild mannered Mark Meehan’s good judgment flies out the window when he finds his lover banging another man. Things go from bad to worse as Mark’s crazy revenge scheme uncovers shocking secrets—sending him straight into the arms of hunky lawman and old friend, Tony Gervase, a man of limited patience and secrets of his own.

This is the first of three books in The Men of Smithfield series. The other two are Happy Ending and Cover Me and both are on my TBR pile impatiently waiting to be read, because they know I badly want to.

Seriously, Gobsmacked was a delicious read! I obviously enjoyed it for the sweet romance and hot love scenes between cuties Mark and Tony, but even more for the highly entertaining, diverting voice with which this story was told. The voice is Mark’s, the story is told in the first person. Not a POV I normally prefer because it easily gets boring and annoying to miss the thoughts of the other characters. And I admit that in this case I missed Tony’s thoughts as well, very much so. But that little disappointment was compensated by the very amusing thoughts of Mark. It never got boring at all and some scenes were downright hilarious thanks to his voice. In previous posts I gave a few examples which I’ll recollect first:

On December 8th I wrote:
This morning, before work, I started reading Gobsmacked by L.B. Gregg and I can't wait to get back to that story. I loved the first chapter where the hero smacked his cheating lover on the head in church 'in front of God and everyone' LOL! Here's the description of that scene:

“My hands clenched the book rack, and my fingers brushed against the Bible proudly displayed there. Staring at Jamie's once sweet curls hugging his rough jaw, I slid the good book out of its safe haven. The cracked leather was worn, but its bulk reassuring. Encouraging, even. So I hauled back, fueled by boiling rage, and gobsmacked that bastard as hard as I could in front of God and everyone. The Bible hit the back of Jamie's head with a resounding Thwack!”

Priceless isn't it?
And on December 11th:

I posted some tid bits earlier and Mandi 'warned' me for a ‘cereal stuck to butt’ scene :) which I anticipated a lot! And indeed... it had me laughing out loud and it kept me chuckling for many minutes. Until the hot sex exploded from the pages... I plan to write a review about this first book in the Men of Smithfield series later, but for now I can tell that I'm very glad to have this book recommended to me! It's witty, sexy and has lovely characters!

Now, about that cereal stuck to the butt scene, it’s as memorable as the thwack to the head scene. I anticipated it a lot, so when I read at page 112:

“My naked ass crunched down on a few stray puffs of breakfast cereal. Tony stepped between my knees, his pants half down his legs, his face hungry. Those deep brown eyes searched mine. I gripped his arms, his back, his neck; anywhere I could reach him.”

I rushed through the sentences. And yes, at page 113 the lube has to be retrieved from the other room and then I was treated at these thoughts when Mark walks out of the kitchen to go get it:

“I hated walking out with my bare ass jiggling, crushed cereal bits falling to the floor. Still, it was a nice ass. I'd sweep the floor tomorrow.”

These are a good example of his hilarious and entertaining voice. Are you loving it already? Alright I give you one more example. This one is when Mark’s ex comes after him:

“I looked around for a weapon, throwing drawers open. I wouldn't dream of holding a knife, he was far bigger than I and had a long reach. Plus this wasn't West Side freaking Story; I had no clue what to do with a knife except to cut meat and tighten the screw on the toilet seat. The only knife I owned was a pen knife on my key chain.” (page 64)

Gobsmacked is more than a funny story, it had a pretty good suspense thread as well. It involved Mark’s cheating ex Jamie and his problems – a storyline with some unexpected twists to it. Again, as a reader, you’re kept in the dark about Jamie’s motives and thoughts and you’re solely dependent on Mark’s interpretation of the occurrences and the people around him. It makes you wonder about a thing or two and all you want to do is keep reading to find out if things are as they seem to be.

Besides humor and suspense Gobsmacked has hot lovin’! Tony and Mark are a sexy couple. They have a history of teenage crushes but never acted on their feelings. Mark lived under the assumption that Tony didn’t return his feelings, what Tony felt we don’t know until the end of the story when he voices his feelings towards Mark.
At the instant we step into their lives, Mark just found out about the cheating of Jamie. After cleaning out his apartment and getting rid of Jamies stuff, he goes to his friend Tony’s house to hide from Jamie for one night. And then things start to get hot, hot, hot. Thanks to some alcohol that’s thrown into the mix Mark and Tony end up in the bathroom finally getting down to some hot action.
I loved all the sex scenes between those two guys. My only complaint is that there weren’t enough of them ;) No seriously, the balance between the humor, suspense and hot lovin’ was perfect. I enjoyed Mark’s self absorbed ramblings as much as the ex involved action and the sexy scenes with Tony.

To round this up: if you happen to like reading M/M romances and you want an entertaining, sometimes even hilarious, romantic and very hot read with a little suspense and sexy as hell protags, you should definitely pick up Gobsmacked! Don’t wait, go get it now!

Review of Maison Domine by Skylar Kade

Skylar Kade
Maison Domine
Samhain Publishing, September 2009

Genre & Keywords
: Erotica, Bdsm

Rating: êêê
Heat level:

The Back Blurb:
Taking bonding and exothermic reactions outside the laboratory… A Binding Ties story.

Organic chemist Lara Brunner is at loose ends. Since childhood, her life has been focused on work and achieving success in her field. Only now, weeks away from her tenure review, she realizes she’s pushed herself too far. Casting about for a way to release her stress-crazed body from career tension, she visits a BDSM retreat, hoping a weekend of sexual submission will do the trick. Inducting her into the lifestyle is her at-work nemesis—Jaxon Greene. But the sinful intent she encounters in Jaxon’s sexy eyes makes her heart race with desire…and fear. Gorgeous men like him don’t go for zaftig academics like her. Once the fantasy weekend is over and real life returns, he’ll forget all about her. Jaxon is blindsided by his intense attraction to Lara. The more time he spends with her, the stronger their invisible bonds become. Bonds that are stronger and more permanent than any knot he can tie. He’s not normally into converting vanilla women to his lifestyle, but something makes him want to cast his inhibitions aside and claim her for his own. First, though, he has to free her from preconceived notions of proper sex…and love.

Warning: This story contains bondage and whips and sexy professors—oh my!

Maison Domine is one of the three Binding Ties stories of which I’ve read earlier The Initiation of Isabel by Jenna Ives. I rated that one with five stars and three flames because it was a totally hot, surprising story that blew me away. Maison Domine however is much less surprising and certainly not as hot. I finished it the first week of December and already I have a hard time remembering the story and the love scenes! What I do remember though is some questions I had about the logic of the protags actions.

But let me start by saying that overall this was a pleasant read. The hero, Jaxon, is a sexy Dom who aches to show his reluctant colleague Lara the ropes of the lifestyle. Lara is a strong, confident woman who’s always in control and Jaxon knows she’d make a beautiful submissive. When the two meet at this BDSM retreat the heat is tangible. Jax sure knows how to put it, he had my pulse fluttering with his dominant ways:

“He pressed her up against the wall, and tilted her face to meet his gaze head on. “This is how it starts. I can see the signs…the flutter of your pulse right here.” His finger trailed from her chin down to her neck, and Lara released a barely suppressed shiver. “Your eyes dilating in anticipation, excitement, and a slight hint of fear. You are, after all, putting your body and mind completely in my hands. Giving up your tightlyheld control.” He wrapped his hand ever so gently around her neck, putting enough pressure for her to walk the edge between certain safety and the gray space of what if most submissives thrived on.”

Jax gently guides Lara into the scenes they experience together while he himself gets more and more emotionally entangled. They cuddle and have their tender moments after the sex. So far the story develops well.

But that’s before the irregularities occur. One of them is at the end when Jax tells Lara he fell for her during the faculty luncheon earlier that year, which was months before they met at the BDSM retreat. But when he saw Lara at the retreat for the first time nothing of this was mentioned. In fact he was surprised that mouse-type Lara looked so stunning in her red dress. This meeting in the beginning of the book is described from his point of view as well, so I would have expected to hear about his crush on Lara right there and then.

Another thing that appeared to be strained was Lara overhearing a part of Jax’s telephone conversation with his best friend and drawing the conclusion that she did (I don’t want to give away too much). This scene seemed rather affected, as if the story needed more tension and this was the only solution the author could come up with.

And as in most short stories or novella’s the end felt rushed. Jax seems awfully sure of himself and their relationship after spending only a few days with her that didn’t end well at all. His gesture is sweet, but imo farfetched at this time in their relationship. Doesn’t mean though that he isn't very easy to love - he’s the best thing that could happen to Lara. He convinced me of that in the short span of time I ‘lived’ with these characters!

In short, there were a few little issues I had with the flow of this story, but overall it was a enjoyable read with some sexy scenes involving a hot and considerate Dom and his confident but naturally submissive woman.

Today's Man Candy and Sisterhood Award

It's been too darn busy days at my every day job. I hardly had time to do some bloghopping let alone blogging myself. I hate it when the EDJ gets in the way like that ;)

I hope to get some reviews done the next couple of days, but for now I thought the least I could do is treat you to some new sweet and sexy man candy. Although it's a shame he hides his nipples with that shirt...

And last but not least, I want to let you know that I just got invited to Hawk's Sisterhood. Yippee! Hawk, aka Houston A.W. Knight, stopped by at my place today to give me the Sisterhood Award and it makes me a very happy and grateful woman. I owe the lovely smutty hussy Cecile for introducing us, thanks sweetie!

Btw Hawk's blog did get a make-over this weekend and it looks awesome, go check it out yourself!

Today's Man Candy: Dean & Sam

Some of you may know or have guessed it already, I'm a Supernatural fan! I like the storyline, the adventures and I just lurve the two sexy brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester.

I might as well admit that I have a little... alright a huge... crush on Dean! Although Supernatural is not about romance, he has everything I love in a romance hero, in fact that I love in a man period.

He's sexy, confident, caring, tough, dark and brooding but also funny and witty, gorgeous, emotional at times, hot, selfless and he has the most amazing eyes. *sigh*

This morning I stopped by at Ms Moonlights blog and she has this amazing post: All I want for Christmas is Sam and Dean. She found a lot of great and hilarious Youtube vids which you should go check out at her place. The last one is a bit disturbing though, so be warned!

I can't wait for the hiatus to end with the next episode at January 21st!

And when you click on the next pic of Jensen be careful not to drown in his eyes...

Happy Gay Friday & L.B. Gregg and Jenna Byrnes

I've finished this week a few M/M reads. First there was the short free story Four Golden Rings by T.A. Chase (look at my sidebar for download), which features the heroes of Chase's two Love of Sports series. It was fun, quick and toothaching sweet. It was nice because I read the Love of Sports books and I knew the characters.

The second story I read was Gobsmacked by L.B. Gregg. I posted some tid bits earlier and Mandi 'warned' me for a cereal stuck to butt scene :) which I anticipated a lot! And indeed... it had me laughing out loud and I kept me chuckling for many minutes. Until the hot sex exploded form the pages... I plan to write a review about this first book in the Men of Smithfield series later, but for now I can tell that I'm very glad to have this book recommended to me! It's witty, sexy and has lovely characters!

Last but not least I read Nothing but Trouble by Jenna Byrnes. This book I'd won last Sunday at the author's blog and is the same book that 'deflowered' Cecile who had never read a M/M romance before. It's a long short story (around 50 pages in my pdf version) and considering the length it was really good. It was a bit rushed towards the end, things happened fast and love was found very quickly but that's not unusual with the shorter stories. The most important thing is that the couple was loveable and their relationship was sexy and very, very steamy! My, the love scenes got me blushing from head to toes! My hubby didn't know what hit me... or him.

And, as I just posted, I decided to sign up for the M/M Romance Challenge 2010 since I like reading about man love so much :)

Enjoy today's steamy wet couple. Happy Gay Friday to you all!!

• You don’t have to select your books ahead of time. Even if you do, you can change your books as you go. Your books can crossover with other challenges.
• You don’t need a blog to participate. You can comment on this post if you’d like to share a book list or reading pool.
• Please create a post on your blog where you’ll be keeping track of your challenge reads and link back to this post so others can join in on the fun. If you use a “Current Challenges” page, or something similar, you can link back from that page instead of creating an individual post.
• You can use the large banner I’m using at the top of this post or you can use the smaller buttons I’ve provided below. Just copy the code provided. There’s no need to save the smaller buttons to your own server. (I have another large banner you can use here, if you’d like.)
• You can join at anytime between now and the latter part of 2010. Just give yourself enough time to read your chosen amount of books.
• Books chosen can be any length, sub-genre, or format. eBooks, paperbacks, young adult books, audio books, and re-reads are all okay.
• Once the challenge starts, I’ll create a page for everyone to post their reviews. Reviews are encouraged, but are entirely optional.

Early Christmas present & Touching My Soft Spots

Today a box with 20 books arrived! I'd won them at Leontine's Blogaversary this week. Thanks again, Leontine!! You can imagine it felt like an early Christmas for me!! Look at them!

I spent quite some time browsing them and reading little tid bits to figure out with which one I should start. Eventually I picked 5 books to put on top of the pile because they touched my Soft Spot one way or the other (I admit... most covers had a lot to do with it... again)!

Here's the complete list with the 5 Soft Spot hitters highlighted with the blurb and the cover:

1. Sherrilyn Kenyon – One Silent Night (Dark Hunter series, #16)

2. Sherrilyn Kenyon – Dream
Warrior
(Dark Hunter series, #17)

The son of Warcraft and Hate, Cratus has spent eternity battling for the ancient gods who birthed him. He is death. Now that an ancient enemy has been unleashed, Cratus's task is to destroy it.
Delphine Toussaint is a philanthropist whose passion is for world peace. When a chance meeting brings her together with Cratus, the two develop a striking bond. Cratus is at first baffled by this human and her open nature...but soon he realises that Delphine is the key to completing his mission.
Delphine, meanwhile, is troubled by nightmares that are starting to become a reality. The only comfort she can find is around Cratus. But she refuses to give in to war, and he refuses to lay down his arms. Yet one of them must give in, or humanity will pay the price...

3. Meljean Brook – Demon Night (2008, The Guardian series, #3)

Charlie Newcomb worked hard to get her life back together. But all that is shaken when she’s set upon by three vampires desperate to transform her beauty into something evil. Because Charlie is the vital link to something they want—and need. It’s Charlie’s flesh and blood sister, a medical scientist whose knowledge could be invaluable to the predators.
But to get to her, they must first get to Charlie, now under the intimate protection of Ethan McCabe. As her Guardian, Ethan is attracted to her vulnerabilities—as well as her strengths. The closer he gets, the more protecting her becomes not just his duty, but his desire. But will it be enough to save Charlie when the demon night falls?

Tall and darkly sensual, Caine Bradley is an undercover FBI agent who’s been posing as Walker’s henchman. Compelled to work with Caine to lure her ex out of hiding, Dana must fight against her own raw, urgent needs. But is he

greatest mistake…

Maggie, Cailean, and Delaney Claren are three cousins who grow up unaware of one another--until an inheritance brings them together. Now mysterious journals and the deed to an ancient Scottish castle will bring them face-to-face with the warriors at the heart of the MacKinnon family, three brothers sentenced to cruel fates by a terrible curse.
Duncan is trapped in the form of a ghost, Rory must live an immortal life alone, and Alexander has been wrenched by time from the past to the present, with no way back. Review of Skin Game by Ava Gray

Ava Gray
Skin Game
Berkley Sensation, 2009

Genre & Keywords
: Paranormal, Suspense, Violence

Rating: êêêê½
Heat level:
¹½

Skin Game by Ava Gray has been applauded very loudly by a lot of the romance bloggers I follow. It made me curious enough to give this novel a try myself. I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. I’ve never read a book by Ava Gray before - as Ann Aguirre she has written some SciFi and Urban Fantasy novels – but this will definitely not be the last one I want to try. Next June the sequel Skin Tight will be released and I will be hanging out for it. Because I can only applaud along with the others: man, this woman can truly write a wicked, explosive story!

Reading Skin Game was a different experience than usual. It’s a full length novel that’s structured accurately and written in a deliberate way. I haven’t read many romances that are quite as… well… literary as this one.
Although a lot of reviews already have been written I still like to share my High 5, Low 5 with you. The High Five are five things that have impressed me or that I really enjoyed, and the Low Five are five things that had me shaking my head in wonder or even annoyance.

First the Back Blurb:
A beautiful fugitive—wanted dead or alive.
Kyra is a con woman and a particular kind of thief. She steals with a touch, but she only takes one thing: her target’s strongest skill. Which means she can be a fighter, an athlete, a musician, an artist—anything she wants… for a limited time. Heartbroken, she turns her gift toward avenging her father’s murder; with deadly patience, Kyra works her way into casino owner Gerard Serrano’s inner circle. After pulling off the ultimate con, she flees with his money and his pride.
A hit man who never misses the mark.
Reyes has nothing but his work. Pity for Kyra, he’s the best and mercy never sways him once he takes a job. He’s been hired to find out where Kyra hid the cash—and bring her back to face Serrano’s “justice.” Dead will do, if he can’t locate the loot. He’s never failed to complete a contract, but Kyra tempts him with her fierce heat and her outlaw heart. So Reyes has a hell of a choice: forsake his word or kill the woman he might love.

High 5

• Fast paced suspense
One of the highest high fives of this novel is the well dosed pace which adds to the great suspense. There’s a lot of action and many events take place but this is alternated at the right moments with reflection on feelings and emotions. The suspense is not only brought on by the chase and the violence. The sexual and emotional tension yield quite some reading suspense in itself.

• Sexy read
The physical attraction between Kyra and Rey is pretty explosive. Although they don’t have sex all the time - like in some other romances where the h/h only have to look at each other to become completely aroused - when it happens their interaction is hot, with some blazing love scenes. These scenes evolve from quick sexual relief into long and tender love making. Their growing feelings for each other become credible because of the way Ms Gray expresses them.

• Not your usual suspects
Ms. Gray’s characters are something else. Her heroine is a con woman and her hero a hit man. Not the most moral persons. And on top of that, they stay that way. There’re no promises made that they will give up their bad ways or profession. Their ethics are not questioned at all. There’s only a hint made that they will retire from their evil businesses once they reach the island. They are not very typical in that sense. More often than not the amoral hero or heroine turns good when the love couple finds their HEA. Not these two! Nope, they even get off on the idea that the other person would kill for him or her! And to be honest, that turned out rather refreshing. The same goes for the supporting characters, Mia and Foster by the way; not your stereotypical man or woman either.

• Manageable paranormal level
So far, I haven’t read many paranormal romances (but I will take it up a step soon) and although this story is labeled as paranormal it remains manageable for me. Because there are no fangs or weresnakes involved. It’s kept at Kyra’s ability to steal other persons best features by touching their skin (hence the title). It’s quite convenient for her, being the con woman she is. I must say that I experienced this paranormal element as an original touch to the story. Once I surrendered to the idea of it, it was quite a good addition to the already strong storyline.

• Strong second storyline
Alternating with Kyra and Rey’s adventures and feelings of attraction is a second full storyline that is set in Las Vegas. In this thread of events the casino owner Serrano that put money on Kyra’s head plays an important role, along with Addison Foster, his head of security. Especially Foster turned out to be multi layered and has the potential of becoming a very interesting hero. He’ll be back in the sequel Skin Tight as a main character.

Low 5

• Poems?
One of the things that bugged me the most was the sudden emerge of Serrano’s poems that he supposedly wrote for Kyra. The man was depicted as some mob-like villain during the entire novel and I had a hard time believing that a man like that would write some soppy poems after his lover left him. No way! But let’s face it, this is just a minor annoyance.

• Too many details
Sometimes the pages were interspersed with details. Particularly the second storyline suffered from too many extensive descriptions. Especially where it concerned the whereabouts of Serrano. This could have been more summarized at times.

• Sex with a target
Okay, I wouldn’t want to miss the hot scenes but I considered it not very professional of Reyes that he slept with his target, and keeps sleeping with her, just out of lust. He’s way past the first half of the story still thinking of killing her. Even at the instant where Kyra confesses to him she thinks she’s falling in love with him. Just seconds before he’s concerned about his reputation:

He couldn’t throw away years of work, establishing himself as th go-to man who always got the job done. He couldn’t walk away from this job with his reputation intact; Foster would see to that.

• Clean?
Near the end Reyes takes another job. He has to take out some child molester and than he thinks:

He needed this. Needed to feel clean again by doing something worthwhile, make the world a better place by taking a scumbag out of it.
This sounded a bit farfetched imo. I think it was the use of the word clean that had me raise my eyebrows high.

• predictable breakup
At one point this novel was not so original. The breakup with the heart squeezing moments of being apart is quite traditional. I didn’t expect it in this story, but it was there. Although it perhaps took more time than in other romances for the h/h to get back together the breakup progressed a tad predictable. And the heart wrenching emotions could have been more milked perhaps instead of replaced by descriptions of every day hit man stuff ;).

These were my five highs and lows. Overall, I loved Skin Game very much. It was a very enjoyable read with a sexy heroine and hero and an interesting supporting cast. The banter between the h/h was humorous and the structure with the alternating storylines and point of views was well done. This novel has got something of a literary allure, not just because of the repeated mentioning towards the end of the book of my favorite modern literary novel ever: One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. I guess that rereading Skin Game would make me discover a few new things, because it has a well developed plot and three dimensional characters.
So, go get yourself a copy of this book if you haven’t read it yet!

Today's Man Candy & a taste of Gobsmacked

Isn't he gorgeous? Just love the red socks, don't you?

This morning, before work, I started reading Gobsmacked by L.B. Gregg and I can't wait to get back to that story. I loved the first chapter where the hero smacked his cheating lover on the head in church 'in front of God and everyone' LOL! Here's the description of that scene:

My hands clenched the book rack, and my fingers brushed against the
Bible proudly displayed there. Staring at Jamie's once sweet curls hugging his
rough jaw, I slid the good book out of its safe haven. The cracked leather was
worn, but its bulk reassuring. Encouraging, even. So I hauled back, fueled by
boiling rage, and gobsmacked that bastard as hard as I could in front of God and
everyone. The Bible hit the back of Jamie's head with a resounding Thwack!

Priceless isn't it?

My Crazy Day, part 2

Yesterday I had this very lucky streak with the random.org gods letting me win Leontine's 20 books, remember? Guess what, that was not all I won that day!
Right before I went to bed I found out that I won an ebook: Nothing but Trouble by Jenna Byrnes! I won it in the Sunday contest on her blog that she spontaneously offered to all the readers of Cecile’s fun post about her M/M deflowering. And when I woke up this morning I found an email from Jenna Byrnes with two attachments ‘cause she also included the free story Valentine’s Trouble.
I’m so gonna enjoy those reads! Thanks Jenna!!

Monday's Hot Couple & My Crazy Day

This has been a crazy day! First amazing thing that happened this morning was me winning Leontine’s blogaversary swag! Twenty books are on their way to me! Just like that! Am I a lucky girl or what? Thanks so much Leontine for the giveaway and the random.org gods for loving me today! I’ll post some more about the 20 books when they arrive…

Then, this afternoon… I don’t know what happened… really I don’t… I unexpectedly became a tweep. Mandi from Smexybooks had this post about her and Smokin’ Hot tweeting about books and she put a link at the end of her post where to find her on Twitter… I clicked… and before I knew it I had my own T-account. Really, just like that :) Within a few seconds I got a welcome message from Mandi and some more followed (very quickly!). And now I can’t stay away anymore. Does that mean I’m addicted? If you want to find me on Twitter look here.

I meant to write a review today about Ava Gray’s Skin Game that I finished yesterday, but I don’t have time for that!! Nope I now have to check Twitter all the time ;)
And of course I also wanna make a stop at Leontine’s place for her Beefcake Club Night, because I got my membership card today. Yay! I can’t wait to meet tonight's guest Dante and her bartenders Aiden, Sam and Tristan. Especially Aiden, I mean… look it him!

Have a great Monday!!

Details:
1. Read at least 10 contemporaries between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010

2. You don't have to pre-select your books, you can just add them as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed. Nothing is set in stone! Also, the books you choose can crossover into or from other challenges you are participating in.

3. Feel free to grab the button below for the sidebar of your blog. It would be great if you would link it back to this post so others can find their way back to this post and join the challenge.

4. If you decide to join this challenge be sure to create a post telling others and feel free to add a link back to this post so others can join in the fun.

5. I will be creating review posts where you can link your own reviews, but reviews are optional.
