I’m Sad But It’s Happy Gay Friday… Without Cookies

Free picture from Stockvault

I’ve been busy with deleting the Man Candy, Hot Couple and Happy Gay Friday pictures that I used over the years on my blog. It made me kind of sad, because all those beautiful photos were a big part of the joy of blogging for me. Especially in the early days of my blog I posted a lot of pictures. But after reading Roni Loren’s post “Bloggers Beware: You CAN Get Sued for Using Pics on Your Blog – My Story” I realized I was using other people’s intellectual property without their permission. And apart from the possibility of getting sued, that’s just not something I want to do. It has been ignorant of me to not realize that before, but now I know and don’t want to continue with it.

Hence, all the black squares where there used to be pictures in previous posts. That’s because I deleted the pictures directly from my Picassa-album, instead of going through all the posts one by one. It makes a bit more of a mess, but
it’s easier to find all the pictures that I think are copyrighted. I will go through the posts one by one later to repair stuff or maybe replace some pictures after I asked for permission to use them. We’ll see how that goes, but at least now I can take the time to do so without further infringing someone’s copyrights.
I also went through my boards on Pinterest and will do the same with my Tumblr account soon.

Meanwhile I’ve been thinking what I’ll do with my Happy Gay Friday posts… They won’t be the same without a Happy Gay Couple picture of course…
But I was thinking, since my HGF posts have evolved over the years from picture posts to little updates from me on my reading, internet and my life anyway, I can keep doing them.
Although I might change them a bit, so that there will be one, or a few, recurring book feature(s) every Friday.
I am thinking about a revival of my ‘Sexy, Smutty Scenes’ feature for example, and the ‘Cover Love’ feature that I used to do for a short period. Or maybe I start a ‘New (to me) Authors’ feature (like Tam is doing occasionally on Fridays).
After last Friday’s post I was already making plans for a ‘Recommended Reads’ feature, but not necessarily on a HG Friday, although maybe now I will do it on Fridays. I’ll have to think about it some more and see what works best for me, I guess.
Also, I’m going to look into stock photo sites to see which pictures can be used for free, because some images to illustrate my posts will be nice every now and then. :) Even if they're of the non man candy kind…

Happy Gay Friday!
~

  2. It's not that I'm too scared at getting caught, it's more a matter of principle for me. Although I also did get an email a few months ago from a photographer whose picture I reblogged at Tumblr. He asked nicely if I could remove it without suing me, TG.
Part of me is glad that I can still ogle your hotties, Tam. :)

  3. Would that be the pic of the hawt man, nekkid chest, red silk caps and red mask? Because I got an email about that pic some weeks ago. To remove it from a guestpost of mine. I got 24 hours to reply or else...

I, too, feel a sense of loss because mancandy has been such an integral part of my blog experience. I already deleted my hunkfest board on pinterest. I had a trembling lip while doing :( This sunday I will go through my blogposts...

    1. No, it was a different pic, nothing red on my hawt man with nekkid chest. I believe he was in white undies...
Good luck with going through your blog posts, I'll think of you.

    1. I might combine them all, every week one of them, or maybe two, on Friday. :)

  8. Well, I'm fence sitting on this one. I'm not as familiar with the copyright laws as I used to be, but there is a catch to all this.

If I remember correctly there was this who discussion on the internet a while back that came down to this:

If photographers don't watermark their pictures then it's guaranteed their pictures will be used for something.

Personally I think it's stupid, because through the use of their pictures, they get known and get publicity. Yes I can understand if you don't want your work associated with some sites, but hell, watermark your work then!

    1. Might be, but even when they don't watermark their pictures, it's still their intellectual property, I think. I know that there are photographers who don't mind the use of their pictures on the internet, but there's no way to tell which ones do mind and which ones don't, without asking them I guess... So, I rather ask them in the future. :)

  10. I've just done the same thing - gone through my blog that is and deleted all the photos...and the book covers, because I wasn't sure about those either. *SIGH* I need to learn about stock photos, because life with no cookies = :(

I too like the sound of the new posts :)

    1. It wasn't easy, was it? I've saved the book covers though. I think it's okay to use those, since we review the books and always link back to the publisher and/or author.
Yeah, life with no cookies is not much fun, I agree. Although I'm not impressed with the free stock photos so far...
