Finding love in strange places
Following the collapse of civilisation isn't the first place you'd think of to set a romance...but since it is 2012, I found it hard to resist.
It was the chance to play with 'what if', something I love and why I write science fiction romance practically all of the time. What if...with the knowledge that we'll soon have, we tried to rectify an animal's extinction with the latest in nano-technology? Save it and save ourselves. What could possibly go wrong with a drastic human intervention into nature? Nothing, obviously. We know exactly what we're doing...
In Bitter Harvest, the scientists who develop the nano-forms get it exactly right. Their technology works. Perfectly. But then the computer, the AI controlling the project, after 'fixing' one animal makes a corrupted leap and decides to 'save' another. The first wave of nano-forms it sends out cures every human disease. But its template is twisted and in trying to perfect the human race, it sends out the second wave. And kills millions. Only a few survive, and they're under constant threat from the voracious 'infected'.
Into this I dropped Robert Sutton and Nicholas Rider, two men trying to make order in a world gone to hell. Well, Sutton is. Rider is more interested in pushing every hot button Sutton has. Mostly, just because he can. Rider is...evil like that.
Bitter Harvest is my first post-apocalyptic romance. It was fun to play in a world where two men find love, even when the rules of civilisation no longer apply.
A little add on to my post. I got into a conversation with Janna about Bitter Harvest, being my first m/m. It is. I've written a fair amount of m/f over the last few years, but something about the characters in this book wouldn't allow me to create an m/f romance. Sutton and Rider were men. I couldn't escape that fact. (Rider absolutely refused to be a woman :) )
CM Torrens and Marguerite Labbe were partners in crime in encouraging me to write the story as it needed to be written. I remembered reading a post by Alex Beecroft about why she wrote m/m and one reason was a freeing herself from gender stereotypes, of inbuilt perceptions that comes with m/f relationships. I honestly felt that freedom as I wrote Bitter Harvest. It surprised me. And I do want to explore it again.

Giveaway
A glance at the six books coming out from Carina this week makes me amazed at the scope of our corner of the romance world. The settings span centuries, from long ago in Ava March's 1822 London story of class boundaries stretched and Erastes's evocation of light and art in Florence in 1875, to not so long ago, with Larry Benjamin's chronicle of young love in the 1970's and 80's and all the way to Kim Knox's story of passion in dystopian 2050. Dev Bentham’s story is set in the present with love finally found, as is KC Burn's tale of a relationship rekindled. Our protagonists are artists and aristocrats, pickpockets and soldiers, all steaming hot.
A Brush With Darkness by Erastes
Brook Street: Thief by Ava March
Moving in Rhythm by Dev Bentham
Bitter Harvest by Kim Knox
First Time, Forever by KC Burn

Blurb Bitter Harvest
It's 2050, and humans are an endangered species. Lieutenant Robert Sutton has survived the collapse of civilization by luck, his wits, and a chance mutation that makes him immune to the nano-virus that has wiped out millions. Now, his compound of survivors is surrounded by the infected, who are driven by the need to spread the contagion through sex. It is only a matter of time before they attack. So when Sutton is assigned to interrogate a prisoner who claims to have overcome the infection, he immediately suspects a trap...
Nicholas Rider may have survived the virus, but he's a changed man, ruled by his desires. But his need for Sutton is different. Rider craves an end to his overwhelming needs, and Sutton could be the man to do it.
Secure in his belief that he's invulnerable, Sutton can't understand or resist his intense attraction to his prisoner. Will Rider be his downfall--or his savior?
Kim Knox brews sex, magic, darkness and technology in a little corner of North West England. She writes erotic science fiction and fantasy romance for Carina Press, Ellora’s Cave, Samhain Publishing, Cleis Press and others.
