Happy Gay Friday & Backblurbs in ebooks

It’s been hot the past few days here in the Netherlands and we had some bad thunderstorms in the evenings. And horror of all horrors, we lost our internet connection during one of those. I nearly had a panic attack, lol! Because the bad thing is that you don’t know how long the internet loss will go on until it’s finally over.

That night I realized how much I’ve come to depend on being able to look something up on the internet. Since I wasn’t able to hop some blogs or get on twitter, tumblr or pinterest anyway, I decided to read for a while. But I happened to be inbetween books.

What I normally do before picking a new book to read, is browsing my shelves on my ereader and then go to Goodreads to look up the backblurb of the book(s) that caught my eye to see if I’m in the mood for the story. But now I couldn’t do that, so I just had to jump in the book, only to find out a couple of pages later that I was hoping for something else. Arghh!

So, it made me wonder: why on earth don’t all publishers include the backblurb in the front of their ebooks?? Some publishers do that, for example Carina Press, but most don’t, which annoys me beyond belief, really. Does anyone know what’s up with that?

Anyway, I ended up reading Divide & Conquer by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux because that was a pretty safe bet on what I was going to get, namely something good. And I’d been meaning to pick it up because Armed & Dangerous was finally released which I was waiting for since it’s the only way I could handle the huge cliffhanger at the end of D&C I’d been hearing about. I’m weird with cliffhangers…
And I also found out recently that the sequel to Armed & Dangerous is announced for publication in August! Yay!
Sharon has been reading Divide & Conquer too this week, so, look forward to the review soon!

Happy Gay Friday everyone!

  1. Oh I agree with you! I hate that when I'm not sure what I'm reading. I'm sorry authors, but sometimes I bought the book a year ago and the cover may be two hot guys and a car. That tells me nothing. You start reading and then ... eh, not what I wanted. I'm so used to using the internet as well, but I love the books that have the blurb right at the front. I think Amber Allure does something similar. A little longer than the blurb, but it refreshes your memory as to what you are reading. It almost lets you get in the mindset.

I'm always amazed at work when our internet goes out (if we lose power we can't work at all, we all sit there looking at the computer like lost sheep), it's really hard to work. We are constantly referring to documents, looking up information, phone numbers, confirming statements.

I actually got a warning that my internet usage was excessive. LOL I was looking up data on gaming companies and it was click link, nope, click next link, nope, next, nope, next, sometimes I'd be to five or six websites inside of a minute as I searched for the right information. Hey, I'd love to have found it first click, but it's the way we work. Thankfully my boss just rolled his eyes at the warning.

It's possible we'll get a big storm tonight as well. Thanksfully my phone works if the internet is down, but it's not as convenient. Have a great weekend. It's 31C here with the humidity today. Too hot.

    1. Holy crap. Could my comment BE any longer?

    2. *g* Technically, it could be longer. ;)

I agree, the cover doesn't say too much about the content of the book most of the time, and my tbr is so huge that I can't remember the blurbs of every title on there. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this memory lapse.

You're sure your excessive internet usage at work isn't caused by clicking on links to yummy pictures, Tam? ;D
I'm just glad I work for a small organization that doesn't register internet usage and stuff. Not that I have much spare time to do fun stuff on the internet, but yeah it's pretty essential for my work too to be able to use the internet.

I hope the big storm didn't cause too much damage, like an internet outage. Enjoy your weekend!

  2. I hate blurbs in the front of ebooks. Hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate. Some publishers do them and I often think I've started the story, only to realize that the story has just been spoilered by a blurb I was trying avoid.

I waited to read Divide & Conquer until this week for the same reason - I hate cliffies!

    1. *gasp* I never realized there are people who don't read the blurb before reading the book!
But wouldn't you agree that when all publishers did the same - like put the blurb on the first page of the book - it would be easier for you to avoid them, then it is now with the inconsistency?

Good to know I'm not the only one having these strong feelings about cliffhangers. :D

  3. Okay, I started this comment like, five times, because the cover of Stars And Stripes is just....so not working for me? Is the clown from IT making an appearance in Stars And Stripes?? I know its in the "line" of the other covers but - *shudders* a balloon animal *freaks out* Makes me wonder if the plot in this book is going to freak me out!

Okay, so not related to the post but had to say it anyways ;)

Have a great weekend, Janna, it's going to be a summer sunshine filled one!!

    1. I'm with you, it's not really working for me either. Actually none of the covers in this series are very appealing, but alas, don't judge the book by its cover is not too difficult with this series for me. ;)

Happy weekend to you too, hon! We're having great summer weather. :D

  4. I wondered the exact same thing when I was on the station with no internet. Some epubs show blurbs in Calibre but you can't see that on the eye-pad or your reader. So a blurb would be good!

    1. Yeah, I was thinking about you and your recent no internet period. It's so inconvenient to not have the blurb at hand. Especially when it's for a longer time, like it was for you.

  5. I'm with Chris on this one, though not for the same reason.
I read the blurbs when/before I buy books, but once I start a book, I don't want to read the blurb again, I want to read the story, so, no, I don't like the blurbs in front of the book. Even if I can't quite remember what the story was about because it's been a while since I've bought it.

    1. I guess I'm just too moody of a reader for that. ;) I better don't read further when I'm not in the mood for a particular topic, or for angst, or for fluff, etc. when I was expecting something else. I get all cranky. Reading the blurb usually - not always - prevents that. :)
