Happy Gay Friday & The Burden of Social Media?

Look what Sharon found on Facebook! It’s beautiful isn’t it? Unfortunately I don’t know who the artist is, otherwise I would’ve credited them [edit: thanks to Cole I know now that it's Michael Breyette! Check out his site here, it's amazing]. Sharon found it on a gay FB page called Pictures of Men and she told me they have about 12,000 pics in the album. I secretly think she’s on a mission to get me to join Facebook, lol! I’m certainly tempted now! ;D

But so far I’ve managed to stay away from it. It seems so time-consuming, much more so than Tumblr or Pinterest (I just received my Pinterest invite and I’m still on the fence if I really want to join). What do you think, am I missing out by not being on FB? Or am I not the only one without a FB account? And have you joined Pinterest yet? Apparently it’s the newest hottest thing among the social media… How much more can I take, *g*.

But seriously, I think it’s pretty hard keeping up with all the social media options out there. Sometimes I get nostalgic and think about… (beware, now I’m going to sound really old) …the days we still communicated with a phone with a cord (which was situated at a central place in the house, because we had just one phone for us all) and we only phoned with people we already knew and had met before. There’s a generation growing up right now who doesn’t even know about the existence of non-cordless phones, or how they didn’t have buttons but a finger wheel. I wonder what these kids will get nostalgic about 20 years from now (“Remember when we had only like 10 different sorts of social media and that we had to use those weird apps on those ridiculous slow/big/silly phones to communicate with each other”).

Ah well, before you all think I’m ancient, I better end this post. But not without wondering for a little while longer if blogging will still exist 20 years from now. ;)

Happy Gay Friday everyone!

  1. I use different social media for different purposes. I do have Facebook and a group of us use it for different events/group activities and I have family on there. I rarely post status updates unless it's a video or something amusing. I comment on other people's updates though. My daughter and I correspond through FB and she will often send me links to Tumblr pics through FB and vice versa (clean ones).

Tumblr is my porn feed. I check it at least daily, scan down my dash, reblog a few, then move on. If I don't reblog for days, no one knows or cares.

Twitter is now my primary blah blah blah feed. It's where I put all the stuff most people put on Facebook. I've gotten to know people far better through Twitter than FB and none of my family know about Twitter so I don't have to self-censor so much, no kids following me, that type of thing.

Pinterest, no interest. It's just a bunch of pictures. That's what Tumblr is for. Why would I start another site with more pictures of boys? I don't want to post pictures of cats (I can do that on Tumblr) or flowers, or recipes, etc. Everything you see there is on Tumblr. Although I think you can pin something on someone's wall, but that's why I follow you on Tumblr. Or send me a PM with a link if you think it's so great I need to see it.

Then of course the blogs which are something else again. So for now, I've got sufficient presence, but as I said, each one serves a purpose. I don't see the point of having 3 or 4 social networking sites and posting the same thing to all of them. Not from a personal point of view, it's different if it's a professional thing where you are posting as "public person X", but when it's me, private citizen, I post something in the most appropriate place for it, depending on the subject.

What a long post. :-) Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. LOL, Tumblr is my porn feed as well and what you said about not reblogging for days and nobody noticing is actually what I like about Tumblr. There's no pressure, only goodies. :)

I have a few family members on FB too, but I honestly don't want to stay in contact with them that way. My sister sometimes tells about what my brothers post on FB and how annoyed she is by their childish discussions for example, but that she can't 'unfriend' them to avoid their posts because that will be noticed and will stir some shit in the family. So, I don't want anything to do with that, plus I don't want to censor the things I like to post, but I think my family won't appreciate the uncensored stuff, lol.

It makes sense to use different social media for different purposes. For me goes, I rather don't want to use them in Dutch, because I don't want to know my friends, family and colleagues were I am or what I do all the time, if that makes sense. Social media don't leave much room for privacy I'm afraid.

I did my best with a long reply to your long post, didn't I? ;D
      Have a great weekend!

  2. Zomg...that is an awesome drawing!! Talented artist, for sue! I've stayed away from Tumblr, and Pinterest is I think the same thing(in blue print at least) as Tumblr. I don't think I can keep up with all the social media options. There seems to be one popping up every few months or so but each demands a bit of time.

There was a time where everyone was already using internet but I was just not interested. I read rather than working the internet highway. Until my brother dissed his old computer - yeah...well suddenly I got acquainted with chatrooms and websites and found a whole world who was just as interested in the books I read. I was baffled but also intrigued. And here we are; tweep, blogger, gooogler, goodreads junkie etc. Yeah...sometimes I wish the world would revert back to a different speed where we wrote letters and mailed them...with a stamp and such.

I don't know if blogging in its current form will excist in 20 years from now but some form of blogging will be there in the future ;)

Have a great weekend, tomorrow I'm going to my grams and celebrate her 85th b-day. And no, she does not consider herself old ;)

    1. It's an awesome piece of art, isn't it? I immediately loved it!
I have trouble with keeping up with all the social media options as well, but really, I swear ;), Tumblr is very easy to keep up with. I think you would love it! :D

OMG the hand-written letters with a stamp are nearly exstinct aren't they?! LOL! I agree, with you on the future of blogging, it probably will survive in some form or another.

OH, Happy Birthday to your grams, hon!! Of course she's not old: as long she doesn't feel old, she definitely is not old. :D
      Have a fab weekend!

  3. What a wonderful picture - I love it!

I have the twitter acct. and the facebook acct. but frankly use them rarely. Twitter mostly when I'm away from home doing some book thing and facebook always sends me birthday updates for my friends. lol

    1. Glad you like the picture. :)

To be honest, I use Twitter not very often either. Not even when I'm away from home. But every now and then I spent an evening on it and it's always fun. :)
I heard about the birthday updates on FB, that would be helpful for me too, lol!

  4. I'm not on either Twitter or Facebook. I have enough trouble keeping track of my blog, tumblr, Goodreads, and email. The last thing I need is another social media site! :)

    1. I know! And yet, I get tempted to try another social media site every now and then. Like you were seduced to try tumblr too. ;)

    2. Since my blog's turned into contests all the times, tumblr seemed like a way to post things that I used to post on my blog, long ago. :) You'll notice my tumblr's more likely to get a Mature rating for language than for nudity. ;)

  5. Hi Janna!

I have an answer to your question :D The artist is Michael Breyette (who has many many many more just like this that are all wonderful). This one in particular is part of an art/story anthology that came out... last year I think, or the end of 2010 from MLR called Illustrated Men. It's really good!

I don't use FB either, because I care for it probably the least of all the social media places. I actually just joined Pinterest a few months ago too, but I've only been on it once, lol, so I doubt I'll become really interested in it. They do have great recipes on there though, all the time, lol.

I do use Tumblr a lot, of course for the pics of hot guys! Other than that, just GR for me. I only even joined Twitter about a month ago. I used to be such a hold-out, I didn't have any of them! I finally got sucked in... and yeah, it sucks up all my time!

    1. Hey Cole! Thanks so much for the artist's name! I'll add his name to the blog post. I love his website/art and I noticed that you can also buy t-shirts with his amazing art printed on it. Wow.

Do I already follow your Tumblr? If not you must tell me its address/name. :)

It's intriguing how you get sucked in like that once you give in, isn't it? lol! I'm glad you did join though! xoxo

    2. No I haven't joined Tumblr yet, I just follow a bunch of them for the pics! :D

But yeah, this artist is wonderful. I wouldn't have known who he was either if I hadn't gotten that illustrated anthology for review when I was at JW. But it is a really wonderful compilation and I could look at his website for hours and hours. Have you seen the prices for his original prints? He does well for himself!

    1. Yes, that's a good way to use it! I think it's not that different from Tumblr actually. :)

  7. yay! we found out who the artist is...will be checking out the website :) I do FB almost exclusively. I don't have a twitter account. I Smell Sheep has one and I post blog links there but that is it. I have a pintrest account and will glance at it twice a week to see if anything funny is there. My teenager lives for Tumbler. She has multiple accounts and has over 1500 followers on her personal one .
There are so many options out there, but you have to pick your poison or you will spend all your time doing them. I just count on my friends who visit other social media to send me links when they find something juicy on their sites ;)

    1. Yes! Thanks again for sending me on his path, Sharon! :)

I just received my first Pinterest related message today: it was spam! LOL And I haven't even started to use Pinterest yet. That doesn't bode well, does it. *g*

I think you're very smart staying away from all the other social media! And I very much appreciate you sending me the links from FB you find juicy. ;D

  9. I am not on Pinterest - for very much the reasons you point out - when is enough enough? I love my blog, but I feel like I have to be EVERYWHERE these days and I just don't have the time between family and kids and reading! I do use FB - but it's for family, not blogging.

I LOVE TWITTER... couldn't live without. That is my #1 social site!

    1. Yeah, I did give in, I'm on Pinterest now... I know! *g*
I don't have the time either but Pinterest is not as demanding as other social media can be. Nobody will notice when I'm not around for a longer time.
I agree with you on Twitter! It's fab! :D
