Guest Review: Abercrombie Zombie by K.Z. Snow

Backblurb:
Dead folks are the best friends of Quinn McConnell and Hunter Janz. Dead folks pay the bills for this team of psychic mediums . . . but just barely. To make it into the financial comfort zone, they need to outshine their competition.

Quinn needs even more than that. He’s been infatuated with his partner for the nearly three years they've been together, and if he can’t either get over his crush or make something happen with Hunter, they’ll have to split up. Sexual tension and unrequited love can wreak havoc with a psychic’s reception.

Salvation comes hobbling along in the form of a well-dressed but ravaged-looking man who can clearly see and converse with the dearly departed. Why? Because, he claims, he has something in common with them: He’s also been dead. The zombie who calls himself Dustin DeWind needs the psychics’ help in finding the man who made him what he is. In return, he promises to steer them toward the often elusive spirits that are their stock in trade.

Guest review by SharonS.:

When I saw the title of this novella I had my doubts, but thought it’s a quick read and why the heck not! Boy, am I glad I did. This might only be a 100 page novella, but it was fabulous reading. By that I mean the writing was top notch you got a lot of layered story content. This was as satisfying as any novel.

It is written from the POV of Quinn. He is a psychic/medium and works as a ghost hunter and sometimes with law enforcement to help solve crimes. He is gay and doesn’t hide the fact. Three years ago he met Hunter at a wedding, which turned into a quickie in the front seat of Quinn’s car. They both had the same abilities and decided to work as partners, but not be lovers. Hunter insists that he isn’t really gay, just that he is strongly attracted to some men. At the time he was engaged to Emily.

Quinn is head over heels in love with Hunter, but knows it won’t go anywhere and he has to work hard to keep his feelings locked down at all times so Hunter doesn’t get spooked. This is especially hard for Quinn since he is a bit of a horn dog whenever Hunter is around . They have a good working relationship and he doesn’t want to ruin that. The men are working on a mysterious missing person case when along comes Dustin DeWind (seriously!) who offers his own unique abilities (he can see and talk to ghosts) in return for their help in finding the person responsible for his “condition”.

Dustin’s situation forces Hunter and Quinn to open up to each other and finally talk about their feelings. My heart bled for Quinn as he struggled with wanting to know, and the fear of answers he might not like. Their story is so loving and sweet I had to brush my teeth for fear of cavities . I loved the mix of mystery and magic.

The author wove together three stories of love. One ended in death, one damaged by pride and lack of communication. Will Quinn and Hunter learn from their mistakes? Now what do you think ? This was the first story by Snow I’ve read and you can bet I will be reading more!

  3. I loved this one too Sharon. KZ did a great job of mixing the paranormal, with romance, with a touch of humour. Not what most people expect I think but well worth reading.

  5. Lovely review Sharon - thank you. Hmmm. The word zombie has me worried (I'm not a zombie fan). Knowing there is no zombie sex - PHEW! - is good :)
