Happy Gay Friday & The Letter A

And another week went by… My mini-break is turning out to be not so mini at all. In fact, I’m still enjoying the A-Z Reading Challenge and now that I’m not spending as much time online as I used to do, oddly enough my social calendar seems to become a bit overwhelming. Or maybe it’s not so odd…
Somehow invitations for fun dates with friends keep coming in and they’re making my calendar for the month of May look like one big busy feast of colors (since I’m using different pencils for all the dates). It must be the wonderful, sunny and warm weather that we’re having here for weeks now. It makes people want to plan parties, barbeques and other get-togethers. And also, all the national holidays during this time of year are a great cause for fun things, there are plenty of musical and cultural festivals you can go to.
Yesterday for example, we had a national holiday here in the Netherlands what’ll probably translate as ‘Liberation Day’ or something like that (we celebrate the end of WWII because by then, in 1945, most part of our country was liberated by the Canadians and Americans). And we went with a couple of friends to one of the many rock and pop festivals that are organized in the larger cities each year on May 5th.
Between the beautiful weather, all the holiday events and the upcoming deadlines at work, I’m afraid there probably won’t be much time for my online activities left. So don’t start to worry if you don’t see me around much, I’ll be back *wink*. Every now and then…

My reading groove is still not what it used to be, but the A to Z Challenge is at least helping me with picking my next book. I moved on to the B last week, no C books in sight yet, but here are a few reviewettes (not as short as Chris's ones but alas) of the A titles I’ve read:

This is a hilarious and endearing story which shows realistically and makes very palpable how terrifying it is/can be to come out of the closet. Jason is the first person narrator of Anything For You and he is uniquely funny but extremely in the closet. Finding true love makes brave so that Jason can continue being hot and sweet together with his super hero gay rights activist Chad. Highly recommended! 4.75 stars

Book three in the Kindred Spirits series. Cute story about a younger cook winning the heart of an older lawyer who recently lost his lover. Although this books has its own main characters the setting is the same as in the previous books in this series: an inn where ghosts feel happy to show themselves. This time the ghost was the deceased lover of the lawyer Alex, which felt a bit farfetched: I didn’t get why he would ‘show up’ now, one year after he died, and at this place far from home. I did like the bedroom scenes between Alex and Logan but cared less for their insta-love. 3.5 stars

Zach and Angelo's relationship starts out as an endearing friendship, which finally turns into a sweet and hot love story that comes to full bloom in the second half of the book. Their engaging and well-written story is about giving each other space, being able to be yourself, finding your own strength in the other's strength, the balance between give and take, having patience to let trust build and stimulating each other to live your life to its fullest potential. Zach and Angelo complete each other in the most beautiful way and I just loved their emotional interaction and physical chemistry. 4.5 stars

This final installment in this series is an explosive finale of Nicky and Brandon’s ongoing relationship which has been a rollercoaster of emotions from the start. Very raw and deeply felt feelings are threatening to destroy them when this moving couple has to deal with the mother of all nightmares. This was one of the most emotional books I’ve read within this genre so far. And yet, despite everything that’s going on in their lives, the author managed to throw in a couple of sexy scenes which involved some wicked rope work again. And these scenes even supported the plot and weren’t just inserted for hotness sake. I’m kinda sad that this was the last of the Nicky and Brandon books (and free stories) I had on my shelves. It’s hard to say goodbye to this unbelievably hot couple. *sob*. The entire series (Cheating Chance and Inland Empire are the previous books) has been an enthralling reading experience. Highly recommended: 5 stars

Happy Gay Friday everyone!

Giveaway: Jude Mason and Jenna Byrnes' Blog Tour Kicks off Today!

I’m pleased to welcome Jude Mason and Jenna Byrnes to the blog today. They are kicking off their blog tour for their latest release, Alex's Appeal. For a chance to win one of their ebooks leave a comment on this post.

~~~~~
Hi everyone! Thanks for joining us on the first stop of our blog tour, Janna's Erotic Romance Reader blog, and thanks to Janna for hosting us! All week long we'll be talking to readers about our latest project together, book 3 in the Kindred Spirits series, Alex's Appeal. If you haven't read the first two books (why haven't you?) never fear, each title stands alone so you don't have to read them in order. For those who enjoy series works, however, there are returning characters and we think it's fun to show you how their lives progress over time. So if you want the full effect of the series, read Ethan's Choice first, Hunter's Light second, and Alex's Appeal third. The fourth book, Quinn's Blessing, is scheduled for release from Total E-Bound in November.
Kindred Spirits Book 3: Alex's Appeal
By Jude Mason and Jenna Byrnes
Lawyer Alex Brookfield arrives at Whiskers' Seaside Inn with a big decision weighing heavily on him. He's been offered a judgeship, and while it's an incredible promotion, it would mean leaving the house he shared with his late, long-time partner. Russ died of cancer eight months ago, and although Alex is ready to move on, he isn't sure about such a big, permanent step.
Logan Emerson is the inn's chef, and wouldn't mind cooking up something special with the handsome attorney. He's not concerned about their fourteen year age difference. He just knows what he likes and isn't afraid to go after the hunky bear of a man.
Alex heard stories about the inn's ghosts from its owner, his friend and former lover Ethan Roberts. But he's totally unprepared for the spirit who shows up his first night there. Between futile attempts to fend off the frisky young cook, and his offer to help inn co-owner Cade Wyatt come up with a romantic marriage proposal for Ethan, Alex finds his hands, and his bed, quite full.
Happy Gay Friday & What I Read
Oops, it’s Friday night again! And I can’t miss another Happy Gay Friday, now can I? :) Maybe it’s just the perfect remedy for feeling sad all of a sudden (hubby’s fault, he showed me a pic of Binny and it caught me off guard). Browsing through my cookies is just what I need… and chocolate… and book shopping of course! So, you can all guess what I’m doing later tonight ;)
I have been away from home a lot the past week which meant less computer time but more reading time (the benefit of traveling with public transportation). Besides two novels for work (by José Eduardo Agualusa and Lisa Moore) I’ve read quite some romances, all of the m/m kind.
First there are two shorts: Night Shift (49p – 3.5 stars) by Jenna Byrnes and JackMagic (64p – 4 stars) by Jillian Snyder.
Both were good for quick reads but also suffered from the limited amount of pages. In the case of JackMagic this resulted in a HFN instead of a HEA, which is not my favorite. So, I really would like to read a sequel about Aaron and Jack. Those guys were hot together although it took quite some pages before they actually got together. But when they finally did it was definitely worth the wait and I got an eyeful of steamy kisses and sex mingled with some sexy bondage play.
It unintentionally turned out to become the theme for my reading week (and hence this weeks pic).
Because next I read two books and one free story from Ava March’s Bound series. In this case I knew that there would be D/s scenes involved because the backblurbs indicated so. This is a historical series with the same main characters (Oliver and Vincent) in both books and the short story.
I’ll try to review them later this month, but I can spoil that I enjoyed them a lot and that I got my first 5 stars read of May with the second book in the series! It really was an intense read and it had great emotional scenes as well as scorching love scenes. My heart ached badly at one point and the HEA scene was so darn good *sigh*. So, I highly recommend this series, especially when you like historicals or bondage themed stories. Here are the titles in this series and my ratings:
Bound by Deception (Bound, #1) by Ava March, 85p - 4.5 stars
Bound to Him (Bound, #2) by Ava March, 91p - 5 stars
Deliberately Unbound (Bound, #3) by Ava March, 12p - 3.5 stars
And last but not least, last night I finally could start the book Chris and Lily recommended to me earlier this week and that I bought a while ago after some talk about it at Tam’s blog and that I decided to read soon when I read Patti’s review last month. So, my expectations were high for Cheating Chance (177p) by James Buchanan. It’s another first in a series (Taking the Odds), like I haven’t started enough series yet, that I still haven’t finished, lol. I’ve almost finished Cheating Chance, only 30 pages to go. I don’t think it’s going to be a 5 stars read, unless the last pages will be out-of-this-world awesome, but certainly a 4 or 4.5 stars rating. That has to do with the pace of the story. The very detailed descriptions of the technical and gamble law stuff slowed the story down imo. What I really like though is the premise of this novel (a suspenseful investigation), and the unusual characters: Nick and Brandon meet each other at a Goth convention and have the accompanying looks. Nick has long, dark hair and a vamp look, Brandon looks more like a biker boy and has short, spiked, dark hair and tattoos covering his back. One wouldn’t guess that Nick is an agent for a Gaming Commission and Brandon is a cop.
Oh, and it fitted into my bondage themed week unexpectantly because in the second half Nick turned out to be a Japanese bondage specialist *nom nom nom*.
I really enjoy these guys and I’m glad I already have the second book (Inland Empire) on my ereader and I think that it won’t take me long before purchasing the, only recently released, third book (All or Nothing). Maybe tonight, to serve my feel good book shopping mood :)
Another book I want to go buy tonight is the, this week released, new m/m romance from Jambrea Jo Jones called Retribution. I’m really curious about that one! And for more info on new m/m releases I think I better check out Lily’s Wednesday post first.
After the shopping I’ll probably be beat and ready for bed so that I can finish Cheating Chance tonight (it's nearly 11pm already).
Tomorrow has some more ‘outdoor activities’ in store for me and hubby (or actually there’s a bar involved and a dart tournament), so again hardly a chance to be online, *sigh*. I even doubt if I can read much among all them dart players who’ll get louder and louder with every hour. And I don’t know if I want to risk one of them asking me to show him/her my ereader in the middle of some smexy scene, lol! It actually happened to me yesterday in the train that a business guy asked me if that was an ereader and if he could see it. Good thing I wasn’t reading a smutty book at the moment but February by Lisa Moore (very decent, no sex). Pfeww!
Okay, I’ve nearly finished the bar of chocolate so it’s time to go do some book shopping. :)
Have a Happy Gay Friday!!
Detective Nick D'Amato has always been content with his lack-of-commitment love life. For a gay cop in the don't ask-don't tell N.Y.P.D., free and easy always seemed the least complicated route.
William, the new man in his life, has Nick rethinking his priorities. Will's perspective on life and love is different than anything Nick has ever encountered, making him that much more desirable.
The two men are compatible in every way except one, and it's a huge divider. Both are stubborn, neither willing to compromise, until a serial slasher enters their lives. A growing stack of dead bodies has the police running in circles, sending Nick and Will into a nightmare that could change their lives forever.
Short Review of Nothing But Trouble by Jenna Byrnes
Jenna Byrnes
Nothing but Trouble
Phaze Books, July 2009 (revised edition)
Genre & Keywords
: Gay, M/M, Age Difference
Rating: êêê½
Heat level:
¹¹
The Back Blurb:
Adrian Scott doesn't expect to fall in love with his employer after spending one night with him. Graham Elliott is handsome and exciting, a very wealthy man, not in Adrian 's league. But their night together was intoxicating, and Adrian can’t shake the thought of making a life with this older man. As per their arrangement, they have two more nights together. Will that be enough time to convince his boss they belong together, or will the deal prove to be nothing but trouble?
NB: I won my copy of this book at Jenna Byrnes’ blog. She didn’t ask me to write a review or pay me to say something positive about it ;)
Nothing but Trouble is a short, hot read about a sexy young gay man and his older -still very much in the closet- wealthy boss. The opening of the story is strong and spiked my interest immediately.
“I want you to spend the night with me. I’ll pay you ten thousand dollars.”
Adrian Scott blinked, wondering if his employer was serious. He’d never heard of such an offer, except in the movies. “Excuse me?”
The movies indeed, you could say that this story is a M/M variant of Pretty Woman. My first thought was “What kind of man asks something like that?” but I was willing to give Graham the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was secretly in love with Adrian for ages and this was his way of making contact. But that didn’t turn out to be the case: the offer was meant to be a one night stand and had to be kept a secret.
After Adrian does a counteroffer to make it three nights and the guys have the best sex of their lives, Graham doesn’t change his mind: it was intended to be temporarily and it should stay that way. I admit that this attitude made it very hard for me to like Graham. A man of his age and wealth should have been able to admit that he is gay a long time ago. But I also have to say, this type of starting point provides a great way to bring a couple together for some hot sex very quickly, which is a good thing in a short story like this. And at the end Graham turns out to be a very nice guy when more of his human side is shown in his contact with Adrian’s mother.
Adrian on the other hand is a doll from the beginning. He’s really easy to love and the way he behaves, like a lovesick puppy at times, is totally sweet and endearing. I can easily forgive him that he seems to be mistaking lust for love when he declares his love to Graham very early in their relationship. But this behavior seems to suit him, being the open and warm guy that he is.
As a couple I completely fell for Graham and Adrian. Ms. Byrnes does a great job in describing them and explaining their attraction and emotions. They feel real and it’s not only physical between the two men but the emotional storyline is also well developed. Together they are very, very hot. I was treated to a nice amount of sexy and scorching love scenes that left me panting a little and reaching for Mr. ErotRomReader a few times. Nothing but Trouble was meeting my needs and coming up to my expectations completely when it comes to the erotic aspect of the story.
The romance part however felt a little bit rushed, but that seems inevitable with this short length of stories (ca. 40 pages). Not only came Adrian’s declaration of love very quickly and way too early in the relationship, Graham’s switch in feelings towards the end could have drawn out and explained just a little bit more as well. But then it wouldn’t have been a short story anymore. And nevertheless, it’s a rounded story because Ms Byrnes knows how to tell a well plotted, fast paced story! And part of the attraction of Nothing but Trouble is that it’s a fast, hot read that you can devour in less than an hour. Sexy enjoyment guaranteed!
And for those who can’t get enough of Graham and Adrian there’s also Valentine’s Trouble, a very short free story (5 pages) in which we get another glimpse of the sweet couple after they’ve been together for a while. I liked this quickie as well because it’s nice to know how the guys were doing and to be treated to another hot steamy scene!
Happy Gay Friday & L.B. Gregg and Jenna Byrnes
I've finished this week a few M/M reads. First there was the short free story Four Golden Rings by T.A. Chase (look at my sidebar for download), which features the heroes of Chase's two Love of Sports series. It was fun, quick and toothaching sweet. It was nice because I read the Love of Sports books and I knew the characters.
The second story I read was Gobsmacked by L.B. Gregg. I posted some tid bits earlier and Mandi 'warned' me for a cereal stuck to butt scene :) which I anticipated a lot! And indeed... it had me laughing out loud and I kept me chuckling for many minutes. Until the hot sex exploded form the pages... I plan to write a review about this first book in the Men of Smithfield series later, but for now I can tell that I'm very glad to have this book recommended to me! It's witty, sexy and has lovely characters!
Last but not least I read Nothing but Trouble by Jenna Byrnes. This book I'd won last Sunday at the author's blog and is the same book that 'deflowered' Cecile who had never read a M/M romance before. It's a long short story (around 50 pages in my pdf version) and considering the length it was really good. It was a bit rushed towards the end, things happened fast and love was found very quickly but that's not unusual with the shorter stories. The most important thing is that the couple was loveable and their relationship was sexy and very, very steamy! My, the love scenes got me blushing from head to toes! My hubby didn't know what hit me... or him.
And, as I just posted, I decided to sign up for the M/M Romance Challenge 2010 since I like reading about man love so much :)
Enjoy today's steamy wet couple. Happy Gay Friday to you all!!
My Crazy Day, part 2
Yesterday I had this very lucky streak with the random.org gods letting me win Leontine's 20 books, remember? Guess what, that was not all I won that day!
Right before I went to bed I found out that I won an ebook: Nothing but Trouble by Jenna Byrnes! I won it in the Sunday contest on her blog that she spontaneously offered to all the readers of Cecile’s fun post about her M/M deflowering. And when I woke up this morning I found an email from Jenna Byrnes with two attachments ‘cause she also included the free story Valentine’s Trouble.
I’m so gonna enjoy those reads! Thanks Jenna!!
Touching my Soft Spots this week
Last week I wrote:
The things I have a soft spot for are countless. There’s the contented purring of our 18-year old cat, my hubby’s sweet smile, chocolate (in all sorts and sizes), my hubby doing his sit-ups and pushups before bedtime in his boxer briefs *sigh*, the feeling of snowflakes on my skin, the playful twinkle in my hubby’s eyes, surprise parties, my hubby rubbing my feet… You see the theme here *grin*? I could go on and on, but before you start to dislike my hubby, I’ll cut it short.
From today I want to share what touched my book related soft spot on a weekly base with you. And my book related SS is most definitely touched by certain book covers, excerpts and to a lesser extent back blurbs.
I wanna try to do this weekly so I can keep track of those irresistible and interesting books that touched my SS one way or the other.
I’ll keep it short this week.
I saw a lot of interesting books while doing my blog rounds, but there were two books especially that touched my soft spot in a way that makes me running to the ebookstore. They both proof how much of a cover hussy I am…
The first of them is The Darkest Whisper by Gena Showalter. I’m probably the only Romblogger who hadn’t heard of the Lords Of The Underworld series, of which this book is a part. I wanted to try to read some fantasy or paranormal romances and Leontine immediately offered to send me some of her fave books. This is one of the first-in-series-books she emailed me about. And I admit it… the cover immediately gripped me!! WOW, it’s so beautiful and sexy!
Back Blurb:
Bound by the demon of Doubt, Sabin unintentionally destroys even the most confident of lovers. So the immortal warrior spends his time on the battlefield instead of the bedroom, victory his only concern... until he meets Gwendolyn the Timid. One taste of the beautiful redhead, and he craves more.
Gwen, an immortal herself, always thought she'd fall for a kind human who wouldn't rouse her darker side. But when Sabin frees her from prison, battling their enemies for the claim to Pandora's box turns out to be nothing compared to the battle Sabin and Gwen will wage against love....
I must say that the Back Blurb and the excerpt I read at BooksonBoard were (or are) some sort of Chinese for me, but they also got me intrigued. So yeah, I’m going to give this book a try.
But I could use some cheering from you gals though :)
The second one is a book I’ve been jonesing for: Never Say Never by Jenna Byrnes. It’s the second book in the Rose & Thorn Society series, but it’s a standalone. I’ve read the first book, Switching Seth, and did really enjoy that. I did a review on that one.
Back Blurb:
Book two in the Rose and Thorn Society Series
When Adam Reeve is drawn into the world of D/s he couldn't be happier - until his old lover returns, shocked to see Adam collared and vowing to win him back.
Adam Reeve can't keep his eyes, or his hands, off the sexy new stud working out at Full Throttle Fitness. Adam's policy is not to jeopardise his job by having flings with clients, but tall and gorgeous Nick is too hard to resist. Plus, it's been a serious dry spell since Adam's long-time love, Mitch Silver, callously walked out on him.
Nicolas Fontana is instantly captivated by the handsome personal trainer, sweet talking his way into Adam's bed and his heart. He doesn't tell his new love about his desire to dominate. Instead, he takes things slow, leading the less experienced man down the D/s path Nick craves.
Mitch returns with thoughts of reclaiming Adam. He's amazed and surprised by the changes in his old lover's life. Sure, Nick is handsome and definitely hot. But Miguel would never let anyone dominate him. Never.
Reader Advisory: This book contains explicit scenes of m/m intimacy, ménage, D/s, spanking and voyeurism.
Publisher Note: The stories in this series are linked solely by theme. Each story can be read on it's own and the stories can be read in any order.
I can’t find an excerpt of this second book, so I’m gonna treat you with the first paragraphs of the first book, Switching Seth. Be warned though, this opening of the book is really, really hot and involves bdsm. So please stop reading if you don’t want to be confronted with that!
Short Excerpt from Switching Seth:
The blindfold blocked the light of the bright, white room. Seth Carter found comfort and, in a strange way, security in the darkness. He tugged one of his wrists, but the halfhearted attempt was futile. Both hands were bound with nylon rope strung above his head. His thighs were cuffed, a spreader bar holding them wide apart. His feet were free, but the cool metal rod ensured a stance so wide, he wasn’t going anywhere. Excitement fluttered in his stomach.
He’d watched as the cuffs were fitted on his legs. Great care had ensured the perfect width spreader had been chosen. Seth had willingly extended his hands so rope could be knotted around them before they were pulled high into the air. Observing the bondage was part of the thrill. His c**k had been erect, leaking pre-cum, by the time the blindfold appeared.
I’m off to the ebookshops now before calling it a night!
Review of Switching Seth by Jenna Byrnes
Switching_sethJenna Byrnes
Switching Seth
Total E-bound, 2009
Rating: êêêê½
Heat level: ¹¹¹
Switching Seth is a hot read about a m/m/f ménage including bdsm, so it’s not for the faint of heart. But for those who want to try reading bdsm for the first time, this book would be a good start, because it’s very gentle and playful and not about power exchange. It never turned or put me off, although I haven’t read many bdsm stories, when Seth, Michael and Carla played with ropes, paddles or clamps. Their plays were very lovingly and where things were taken a step too far for Carla (in public, with other people joining in), Seth, and later Michael as well, were very understanding and supportive.
Seth is such a sweet guy, he’s the perfect hero for this story. And it’s not surprisingly that both Michael and Carla are in love with and attracted to this man and want his happiness the most of all. He’s hot as a submissive as well, all tied up, gagged and blindfolded. He’s enjoying the loss of control and the pain, but only when they are in the playroom. He’s not the kind of submissive that does all the chores in their household. With Carla he switches from submissive to Dom and back all the time.
At one point in the story the threesome falls apart and Seth has to choose between Michael and Carla. The solution to this situation comes from Carla and it turns out differently. But I think this impasse in the relation of the three of them could have been worked out better. There were too many leaps and holes in Seth’s feelings. I would’ve wanted to read a little bit more about his inner struggle with his emotions (and Michael’s and Carla’s as well). That’s the only thing that withholds me from rating the book with 5 stars instead of 4,5 stars!
Switching Seth is Book 1 in the Rose & Thorn Society series, the second Book – Never Say Never – is coming in November from Total Ebound and I can’t wait to read it. If it is only half as good as Book 1, it’ll be a fun read. And I'm definitely gonna try more of Jenna Byrnes' work!
Back Blurb:
Seth Carter is the perfect submissive. He'll do anything for his lover and Master, Michael. But Seth has a secret desire: he'd like to try being a Dom. Realizing he'll never dominate Michael, with his Master's permission, he goes looking for a slave of his own.
Carla Nelson is new to Southern California and the BDSM club, the Rose & Thorn Society. She's looking for a submissive, but falls deep in lust when she meets Seth. The words 'gay and married' resonate in her head, but she can't fight the intense attraction. When he calls her with a proposal, she discovers she may not have to.
Seth wants to dominate Carla. With Michael training him, he promises they'll fulfil her every desire. The allure of having two men at once--two Masters--is strong. The fact that one is the handsome Seth makes the offer irresistible. Carla agrees to accept Michael in the package deal, unaware of how he really feels about the arrangement.
