I'm very honored to have the fabulous and award-winning author Sloan Parker as my guest today. She’s talking about her upcoming release, How To Save A Life, a m/m romance that is a spin-off of her first novel More. Not only that, How To Save A Life is also the first book in a new series, whereas More is getting its own sequel(s) as well. So, Sloan is having two series on her hands and today she is sharing about how to keep track of all the details while writing subsequent books in the series.
And not only that, at the end of her guest post she’s generously giving away an ecopy of How To Save A Life to a lucky commenter on this post.
It’s all in the Details: Writing a Series
by Sloan Parker

Writing a series involves balancing a lot of details over a longer period of time than working on a single stand-alone story.

Hop Against Homophobia: Giveaway & The Netherlands & A M/M Recommendation
Today is the International Day Against Homophobia and to celebrate this day hundreds of writers, readers, bloggers and reviewers are participating in a Hop Against Homophobia, which is organized by authors Erica Pike, K-lee Klein and Norma Nielsen. The purpose of this hop is to spread the message of homophobic discrimination. We all do that in our own way and we all have a little giveaway for those who leave a comment on our posts (check out the site for the links to all the other blogs).
As many of you might know, I’m from the Netherlands. I’m not sure how well known it is how progressive Dutch politics and Dutch legislation are when it comes to fighting homophobia. So, I'd like to share a few facts regarding Equal Treatment and gay marriage in the Netherlands. Don't worry, I'll keep it short. ;)

Happy Gay Friday & Hop Against Homophobia
I spent a great afternoon chatting with Leontine about books and blog stuff at my kitchen table. She brought home-baked brownies with strawberries and whipped cream, which were a fabulous treat for our taste buds. Yum!

But before I go do just that, I want to give you the link to the Hop Against Homophobia registration page. You’ve probably seen this button at many sites (including mine).
This hop is about spreading awareness of homophobia and there are over 225 blogs participating already and registration is still open. All you have to do is post on the topic of homophobia on May 17th and offer a M/M-related prize (follow for more information the link).
My prize will be the winner’s choice of an M/M title from an online ebook store that let me buy a gift (like All Romance ebooks).
Hope to see you doing some hopping on the International Day Against Homophobia. :)
Happy Gay Friday everyone!

Happy Gay Friday & Captcha frustration
How happy I am that it’s Gay Friday again! I’ve had a couple of crazy busy weeks at work. I’ve been organizing a series of events with performances around art and religion, which drew quite a public and also the attention of the media (even from national television *gasp*). This week we had the last in the series of event days and now I hope to get my life back *g*.
By that I mean my book and blog life of course. ;)
Speaking of blog life and blog hopping: Sophia from Fiction Vixen has a post today, ‘Why I’m not commenting on Your Blog’, that could’ve been written by me (if I were as eloquent as her, that is), lol. It’s about being a comment slacker, which I definitely am, as you might know.

Finding love in strange places
Following the collapse of civilisation isn't the first place you'd think of to set a romance...but since it is 2012, I found it hard to resist.
It was the chance to play with 'what if', something I love and why I write science fiction romance practically all of the time. What if...with the knowledge that we'll soon have, we tried to rectify an animal's extinction with the latest in nano-technology? Save it and save ourselves. What could possibly go wrong with a drastic human intervention into nature? Nothing, obviously. We know exactly what we're doing...
In Bitter Harvest, the scientists who develop the nano-forms get it exactly right. Their technology works. Perfectly. But then the computer, the AI controlling the project, after 'fixing' one animal makes a corrupted leap and decides to 'save' another. The first wave of nano-forms it sends out cures every human disease. But its template is twisted and in trying to perfect the human race, it sends out the second wave. And kills millions. Only a few survive, and they're under constant threat from the voracious 'infected'.
Into this I dropped Robert Sutton and Nicholas Rider, two men trying to make order in a world gone to hell. Well, Sutton is. Rider is more interested in pushing every hot button Sutton has. Mostly, just because he can. Rider is...evil like that.
Bitter Harvest is my first post-apocalyptic romance. It was fun to play in a world where two men find love, even when the rules of civilisation no longer apply.
A little add on to my post. I got into a conversation with Janna about Bitter Harvest, being my first m/m. It is. I've written a fair amount of m/f over the last few years, but something about the characters in this book wouldn't allow me to create an m/f romance. Sutton and Rider were men. I couldn't escape that fact. (Rider absolutely refused to be a woman :) )

Giveaway & Guest post: Ellis Carrington’s Romancing the Monster
I’m happy and honored to have the wonderful Ellis Carrington at my blog today. She’s the author of Amor Prohibido and a couple of short stories. Coming February 12 her newest novella, Immortal Valentine, will be released. And to celebrate this happy event Ellis will be giving away an ecopy of this story at the end of this post. But first she’ll tell us about her fascination with vampires and how they also need romance. Take it away, Ellis!
Romance and Monsters
by Ellis Carrington
I remember being utterly fascinated one night at a high school sleepover when amidst Cheetos and hair braiding somebody pulled out a copy of The Lost Boys. The (at the time) modern portrayal of vampires was intriguing and cool, and a little bit campy…but what really got me was the part where Michael and Star made love. Two vampires making love. Wow. It was totally hot, too.
Unlike the other monsters in their gang they hadn’t embraced what they were. They were supposed to kill each other but because of their desire for each other and the fact that they hadn’t yet shed all of their pesky humanity, they couldn’t bring themselves to. It was an eye-opening first for me, this realization that monsters could be sensual and have emotion.
I liked it.
Vampires don’t have to be pasty, undead, creeps who lurch around and sleep in coffins anymore. They can be a warm-blooded supernatural species. They can be just as alive as us humans and experience a host of complex of emotions, including guilt and love. The fact that they need to drink someone else’s blood to survive, in my view, makes for an interesting plot point: it creates a literal connection with their lover.
It’s more than falling in love, it’s bonding on a very basic, very primal, very physical level.
In my upcoming novella, Immortal Valentine, Angelo is a vampire who feeds once a year: on Valentine’s Day. He’s the last remaining of his kind. His race died out suddenly, and he suffers a weird kind of survivor’s guilt because of that. He can’t feed from another vampire to sustain himself, so he has to live off of humans, and he doesn’t like it.
So he lives a lonely existence, and when he must come out to feed, he makes it as special as he can. He makes it romantic. He finds himself a valentine. For one night, he and some lonely human have a romantic evening, and after they’ve done the Horizontal Mambo and Angelo’s had his fill of the blood he needs to survive, he blurs that human’s memories so he’ll be none the wiser.
But then Angelo meets Caleb. On what should be a Valentine’s Day like any other, plans go awry when Caleb falls ill. Angelo can’t drink Caleb’s blood. That guilt thing, again. And then next thing he knows, he finds himself caring for Caleb a little more than he should… He puts his own health at risk as a result.
Like Michael and Star from The Lost Boys, Angelo in Immortal Valentine is a creature who in a way doesn’t want to be what he is. All living things have a basic drive to endure, but feelings make us do funny things. Deep down he craves connection, and his inability to drain Caleb’s blood and walk away nearly costs him everything.
Or gains him things he needs and didn’t know he was looking for.
Because in my little fantasy land, sometimes even monsters need more than just survival...sometimes they also need romance. Even vampires deserve a happily ever after. Right?

Backblurb Immortal Valentine (releases 2/12 from Amber Allure):
After a heart-pounding brush with danger on Valentine’s Day, Caleb runs into a handsome stranger and decides to roll the dice on a one-night stand. But things don’t work out the way anyone intended when Caleb gets sick unexpectedly. He wakes up alone the next day, extremely confused and utterly embarrassed.
Angelo is an insomniac vampire who leads a solitary existence. He comes out of hiding once a year—on Valentine’s Day—to soothe one lonely human soul while drinking the blood he needs to survive. But when Caleb falls ill he winds up connecting with a human as he never has before, and putting his own life at risk when he does.

Giveaway & Guest post by Sloan Parker: Location, location, location
Today the wonderful and award-winning author Sloan Parker is my guest. She’s talking about her upcoming release, Take Me Home, a m/m romance about two best friends taking a train trip home and getting trapped in the mountains by a blizzard. Sloan is sharing about the choice of a train as the location for this novel. And not only that, at the end of her guest post she’s generously giving away an ecopy of Take Me Home to one lucky commenter. So, let’s give her the stage. :)
Location, location, location
by Sloan Parker
Huge thanks to Janna for inviting me to share on the blog today.
When she suggested I talk about the setting of the train in my upcoming release, Take Me Home, I must admit, I got a bit nervous. The choice of setting for this story was not a carefully planned out decision. I can’t offer much on how and why I thought that choice would be a good one, at least not when I started out. As I outlined the details of this story and the characters, I got more and more excited about the very mobile location of a train, and the positives and negatives of such a choice became clearer. In the end, I thought it worked out better than I dared to imagine when I’d started.

But…
Crap, I wanted this to be an erotic romance, and the erotic parts were essential to each man’s character arc, so that meant they needed some serious time alone, not just at the beginning and the end, but throughout. This was not going to be the kind of story (or the kind of train trip) where they would be engaging in a public sex show bent over a table in the train’s dining car.
That led me to my next set of decisions: They would be traveling over 2000 miles. Which meant they could get a private sleeping compartment. Yes! The erotic scenes were back in play.

How could I use the setting to compound what each man was feeling? Did I want them sitting in one room for most of the story? How could I get them moving around so it wasn’t a bunch of dialogue scenes strung together? How could I work in both intimacy and advance the plot from the confines of the train?

How such details are interpreted by the reader will vary, of course, as we all draw from our own experiences, likes, dislikes, and more when we read. That doesn’t mean just any old description can be thrown in, though. They need to be important and meaningful.
So how can the setting details help to shape the story and characters?
To give some examples of this, here are a few of the ways the setting in Take Me Home affected my writing, the story, and the characters.
- Don’t forget the romance
Sometimes when outlining a story, I have an issue with creating too much distance between my characters, focusing on the plot as it relates to each man individually more than the emotional and physical interactions necessary in an erotic romance. Which is funny, because the emotional sex scenes are the ones I enjoy writing the most.
The confined space of the train provided plenty of opportunities for the characters to interact. The setting forced me to keep their romantic relationship as the focus while planning out the story. When I started working on the scenes, I began by considering the characters’ relationship first, then the plot.
- Setting to enhance the character’s mood
Utilizing a mobile, temporary setting created a sense of being “in limbo” which was very central to Evan’s journey. Throughout the story, he never says the word “home,” even when talking about the places he has lived, he is living, or the old home they are returning to, until a specific scene near the end of the book. That’s because he doesn’t have a home, doesn’t know where his home is. Or perhaps a better way to say that is he doesn’t know if he can fully embrace the home he wants.
- Specifics create a connection
I can’t recall where I’ve read this writing advice before, but it goes something like this…the more specific the details of both time and place, the more universal the story for readers. Romance is fantasy. Most of us who read it like to escape into a love story, to really connect with the characters and get enough details to feel their emotions along with them. Utilizing specifics about the place, the time, and even the weather helped me showcase the emotional moments for Kyle and Evan. As an example, at one point Evan describes the snow-covered ground outside the train’s windows as something rushing by him, rather than the other way around, and he relates that to his own broken life and how it was nothing like he imagined it would be.

Some of my favorite m/m romances have powerfully utilized a setting to draw the reader deeper into the story and the characters’ emotions. The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks, Ransom, Brethren: Raised By Wolves, Keeping Promise Rock, and GhosTV just to name a few.
What are some of your favorite settings in a romance?

Author Bio
Blurb for Take Me Home
Kyle Bennett is a mystery novelist with a severe case of writer’s block. He needs a change. He has three days on their cross-country train trip home for the holidays to figure out how to tell Evan he’s staying there for good. He also has to write the overdue pages for his editor. Only, he’s a little too distracted by the close quarters in their sleeper compartment—and Evan’s ass—to get much done.
The sparks that fly between them are hotter than ever. Good thing they have a real-life mystery to focus on: why people all around them, including Evan’s new boss, want to get their hands on a journal that once belonged to Kyle’s grandfather.
When a blizzard traps them in the mountains, Kyle and Evan steam up the train’s windows and must finally face their true desires.
