Quick Note Before I Go Celebrate

Just want to say that I'm away for a long weekend and probably won't be around for bloghopping and stuff!
Hubs and I are heading out of town in a couple of hours and won't be home before Sunday. We're going to celebrate his birthday (he turned 38 today :)) and Queen's Day tomorrow. We're staying in a hotel in our Dom city, Utrecht, and meet with a couple of our friends to party.
We have internet in our hotel but I just don't know how much time we'll be spending there and how 'demanding' hubby will be ;)

I'll try to do my Happy Gay Friday post and I hope to take some pictures of the Queen's Day celebrations in Utrecht to post later, so you all can see what the big deal is about with us Dutchies and Queen's Day! It's fun and orange!

Hope you all have a great weekend as well! TTYL!

Review of Happy Ending by L.B. Gregg for the DIK Book Reading Challenge

L.B. Gregg
Happy Ending (Men of Smithfield, #2)

Genre & Keywords: M/M, Contemporary, Suspense, (Step)fatherhood

Rating: êêê½

The Back Blurb:
All Seth really wanted was a simple massage—was that too much to ask? When his usual therapist is replaced by a sexy young masseur, Seth finds himself obsessed with the unpredictable - and wholly inappropriate - David Cooke. Pushed to the breaking point by forces both mysterious and not so mysterious, Seth must lose his rigid control to find the happy ending both he and David deserve.

I’ve read this book for the DIK Book Reading Challenge.

This is the second book of this author’s Men of Smithfield series. I’ve read the first one too, Gobsmacked, but these books can all be read as standalones. The third book is Cover Me. And the fourth, In and Out, will be released in May. Besides the two MoS books I’ve also read L.B. Gregg’s latest, Catch Me if You Can. Between these three books and her blog Nose in a Book it’s safe for me to say that I really like her sense of humor. This is an author who can make me laugh out loud with her way with words! A lot!

That being said, I have to admit that Happy Ending didn't make me laugh out loud as much as the other books did. Still, Seth made me chuckle quite a lot and he's a rather refreshing character, with his gruffness and direct, short responses. And the opening scene is memorable and hilarious. Seth and David meet each other when Seth comes in for his weekly massage and David is the replacement for his usual massage therapist. The massage turns out to be a bit too much for Seth, who can’t help himself feeling attracted to the young, somewhat weird David. It’s not so much what happens that makes this a great scene, although you’ll never forget about the poor massage table ever, ahum, but it’s Seth’s view on things and his thoughts that adds a special touch to the scene. To give you an idea of his grumpy, self-assessing ‘voice’, here he is, waiting for his massage therapist, Linda:

It reeked of lavender. Why did everything in the goddamn room have to stink of it? I opened my mouth to breathe. I always meant to complain about the smell, but by the time Linda was through working out the kinks in my back it didn't seem that important. It shouldn't seem important now. This was yet another indication that I was stressed out and irritated.
Irritated that it was currently 2:05 and still no sign of Linda.
The music was getting to me. Who would choose this shit? Birds warbled over Celtic fiddles and bagpipes and penny whistles and—holy hell, it was giving me a tension headache. A little Dave Matthews would have been appreciated. I was tired and tense and whining to myself. Even I didn't like me right now.

Seth and David's first encounter doesn’t end in a friendly way and when they meet again I have a hard time picturing them together, also as a result of Seth’s twisted thoughts about David which oscillate from attraction to repulsion. What David thinks is a mystery but apparently he sees something in Seth. And before the night is over they end up in a dark alley having some fun together. Seth and David are an unusual and somewhat odd couple - talk about opposites attract - but eventually the author succeeded in making me believe in their pairing. Although I thought that the story ended at a point their relationship started to get interesting. And I found myself wishing the book had at least 50 more pages to see a little bit more of them as a couple. By then the non-romantic storyline, which was also part of this book, was wound up and imo that would’ve been the perfect moment to focus more on their feelings for each other. Ah well.

About that non-romantic storyline: I don’t want to reveal too much of this, because it’ll spoil your reading pleasure if you haven’t read the book yet. But there’re a dandy ex-boyfriend, some sneakily taken, compromising pictures, a threat from a loser dad, some secrets about fatherhood and a kidnapping, involved. All these elements bring some suspense and tension to the story that I didn’t get much from the evolving love story, to be honest. They gave Happy Ending a fast-paced plot with some good twists. That and the presence of Molly in Seth’s life - his, motherless niece that he describes as ‘a stout moppet with hair as thick and auburn as mine and eyes the color of copper’ - were the highlights of this story for me. I also enjoyed Seth and David as characters and a couple, but not as much as I wished to, because I feel I don’t know them well enough.

Nonetheless, Happy Ending was an enjoyable read for me that I’ll recommend to anyone who likes a fun, fast-paced, sexy quick read or who’s a fan, like me, of this author’s sense of humor and witty writing.

Mondays Hot Couple & Sexy, Smutty Scene

Today’s sexy scene is from Centrefold by Kris Norris. It’s one of Total E-Bound’s Christmas Crackers and I actually got this M/M/F story in December already. It was a present from the author herself! She sent it to me after visiting my blog for the first time. That’s pretty great, huh? *waves at Kris* You rock, Kris! :)

Anyhow, so far I hadn’t read this ménage story yet. I’m pretty weird with seasonal reads, I like to read Christmas stories throughout the year and not necessarily in December. So, with the weather getting warm and sunny I suddenly felt like reading this one!
It’s a very steamy read so far and I could’ve shared easily one of the many all-the-way scenes but I’m in the mood for a kissing scene to go with this week’s picture! So if you want more of the serious smexing, you better pick this up yourself ;) It does have m/m and ménage scenes, so if you’re not into that, be warned.

Oh and Chris @ Stumbling over Chaos is having a contest with Kris' latest release. Today is the last day to enter the contest to win a copy of her recent m/f romantic suspense, Deadly Obsession (‘Til Death, Book 2)! Contest closes at 7 pm CDT.

The next scene is an m/f kissing scene and Roman and Scarlet are undercover agents 'acting' like a couple, which they have to prove in this scene:

The world dipped a moment before she realised she was in Roman’s arms, moving over to the rug.
She looked up at him, captivated by the erotic gleam in his eyes. He didn’t look upset…he looked like a hunter claiming his prize after a long hard chase. And if his cock was any indication of his enthusiasm, she had a feeling he was in the mood to put on quite a show.
“Roman…”
“Easy, darling,” he soothed, lowering her to the rug. “I know this wasn’t how you envisioned me loving you tonight,” he began, his voice loud enough for Everett to hear. “But under the circumstances…” He motioned back to where the man had taken root in a chair. “Just close your eyes, and feel everything I can do for you.”
She tried to speak, but he caught her lips in a primal kiss, dipping his tongue into her mouth like a man who’d dreamt the act a thousand times. He traced every hollow, every dip and curve, until his taste was all she knew. She moved with him when his fingers twirled through her hair, tilting her head back to deepen the kiss. His soft moan drew her back, his lips still touching hers, their breath mixing.
“I’d like to say, I’m sorry,” he whispered. “But I’ve wanted you for a long time, and I don’t plan on wasting any opportunity I’m given.” He kissed the soft shell of her ear, making her body arch into him. “By the time I’m finished, no one in the room will doubt I’m your lover.”
Scarlet moaned as he slanted his lips over hers again, this kiss more demanding than the last. He didn’t taste her this time, he conquered, thrusting inside, devouring her mouth, eating her without mercy, without hesitation. Every flick of his tongue sent a pulse to her groin, heating her juices until they coated her velvety lips. Hell, if he didn’t stop soon, she just might come.
Roman pulled back, swiping his tongue along her lower lip. “Damn, you’re beautiful. Your lips all full and wet.” He drew a deep breath.

Backblurb Centrefold:

Sometimes a woman wants to be spread between more than just the pages of a magazine.

Scarlet's spent the past six months trying to make her alter ego, Miss December, a ghost of Christmas past. Forced to become the sexy centrefold in a high stakes undercover assignment, she's spent more time pulling copies of her naked butt off the bulletin boards at the station, than she has chasing criminals. But it's not over yet.

Someone's hunting the models from her first assignment, and with only two weeks left in the year, the rampage is only going to escalate, unless they can catch a break. A break that'll have her baring it all in the line of duty once again. But to keep her cover intact, she's being reunited with her ex-partner, Roman, the one man who controls her body in a way she never dreamed and the only man she'll ever love. Or so she believes...

Roman knows he's got some explaining to do, but after six months of hiding, he's finally ready to come clean, and come out of the closet. He's in love with his F.B.I. partner, Aiden, but bound to Scarlet as well. And with their partnership reinstated, he's determined to show her it's one he plans to make permanent. He and Aiden have made a decision, and they'll do whatever it takes to seduce her into their bed. But can they claim her heart before the stalker kills his way through the calendar?

My Weekend Find: Shawn Lane

Yesterday, the beautiful, warm weather invited me to spend my Saturday afternoon in a lazy chair in our garden - with my ereader of course. :)
And I ended up reading three novella’s by Shawn Lane before we had to leave the house around six for a birthday dinner.

I had never before read any books from this author and I have to say that I enjoyed these three a lot! She's a real find for me.
I’ve read them all in a row and all three were different and very enjoyable reads. I like her variety in characters, situations and settings. And although the stories were short (all three 55 pages or less) they have well developed characters and plots. The strength of her stories is probably situated in the fact that her protags share a history with each other, so she doesn’t have to deal with the trap of insta-love. But I suspect that even without that shared history Shawn Lane can make the romance believable within that limited amount of pages.

Here are my thoughts on the three that I've read.

Another Chance
This historical story is short but almost feels like a full length read. It's amazing how much information and character and plot development Shawn Lane can put into 30 pages. The characters, Aubrey and Daniel, feel like real people, we learn a little bit about their past lives and shared history, and their feelings are made very tangible. There's some hot attraction, angst, hurt and happiness - all very well dosed. Another Chance is a fast-paced story that doesn't allow you to put it down for a minute (good thing it's not that long ;)) and when you finish it all there's left is to heave a happy sigh.
One little niggle I had: Aubrey has sex with a woman right before he meets Daniel again and he and Daniel have oral sex. When it's mentioned how Daniel likes Aubrey's taste all I could think was 'yikes', since there was no use of condoms, this being a historical romance. But maybe that's just me. 4.5 stars

Backblurb:
Ten years ago, Aubrey St. Clair, Viscount Rothton, watched the man of his dreams, Daniel Blake, the Earl of Graystone, walk out of his life after a brief sexual encounter. Now Graystone returns to London after the death of his wife and Aubrey is given another chance with his dream man. But Daniel is determined he will have only one night of sexual bliss with Aubrey and then they must once more go their separate ways.

Perfect Man
This novella is not a light, quick read although it’s not long. It’s altogether an emotional story with incredible character depth that I really enjoyed.
Nothing is what it seems, that’s what Alex is about to experience when he meets his old school friend Craig again, who happened to be the guy who gave him a hard time for coming out of the closet back then. Now he’s his blind date and Alex has trouble believing that Craig is gay. Despite his initial scepticism Alex falls for Craig all over again and they start a relationship. Their chemistry is very good and the love scenes are hot. And when they move in together all seems picture perfect. But there’s more to it than this and – without giving away too much – it turns out that Craig isn’t the perfect man he seems to be. The author gave little hints (like ‘the lie slipped out so easily’) from the beginning of the story, building some suspense that way. It makes this a captivating and gripping story that I read in one breath. 4 stars

Backblurb:
Alex Nichols’ sister sets him up on a blind date with the perfect man, a man who has haunted his dreams for ten years. Craig Fontaine was his fantasy as far back as high school, but Craig did his best to humiliate him then over coming out. Now ten years later they both have successful careers and Craig claims to be gay. At first Alex is certain this is Craig’s version of a joke, but it soon becomes clear things have changed in ten years. Craig really is gay and hotter than ever. But Craig has a dark past that threatens their future and Alex may lose his perfect man before they have their chance at happily ever after.

Trust
This is the third story that I read. And like in the other two, the shared history is present in ‘Trust’. Brad and Justin were an item in college, 13 years ago. Their relationship ended badly when Justin caught Brad cheating. Fast forward 13 years and the guys meet again, coincidentally, when Justin gets in a car accident and Brad is one of the paramedics who are coming to his rescue. I loved how these guys, who appeared to be all wrong for each other, couldn’t help themselves and felt indisputably drawn to the other man again. They have to deal with a murderous stalker which makes it necessary for them to spend time together and that leads to a lot of hot smexing. And in the end they have to deal with their feelings, which all boils down to trust and distrust. The author has some heart ache in store for them and an eye opening, thrilling disclosure. She effectively forced me as a reader to make the emotional and stirring ride with them. And it was fabulous. I really loved spending my time with Brad and Justin and I would instantly purchase a sequel if she wrote one (she didn’t, did she?). 4.5 stars

Backblurb:
Brad Callahan has lived with regret for thirteen years. In college, he broke Justin Lowe’s heart by cheating. Justin hasn’t spoken to him since, but his love for Brad never died even if some wounds never heal. When Brad’s paramedic unit is called to an accident, he finds Justin in the wrecked car. Still in love with Justin, Brad visits his former lover and well-known mystery writer in the hospital. When Justin reveals he believes he was forced off the road and has been receiving ominous letters, Brad takes Justin home. Passion long held back ignites and they cannot resist being in each other’s arms. With someone wanting to tear them apart and Justin’s inability to trust Brad again, will love be enough to unite them forever?

I hope you had great weather or good reads this weekend too!

~~~
Smutty scene from Rocky Mountain Heat:
Blake breathed hard, his chest rising and falling fast, his hands on Jaxi strong and firm. She’d watched him for many years, seen him in many different moods. She’d never seen him like he was tonight.
Raw. Needy.
All male.
Everything she’d longed for.
She reached to grab one of his hands and pulled it to her lips, her eyes staring back into his as she kissed his palm. Without a word she tugged until his strong hand rested between her legs, cupping her mound. Slowly, inch-by-inch, she wiggled up the filmy layers of her skirt until they slipped from under his hand.
And his fingers touched the soft curls of her body.
She was still looking deep into his eyes as he realized she was naked under her dress. The heat flash was enough to send a wave of desire through her body causing a flood of liquid to slip over his hand.
“Damn it, Slick, I’m not going to last thirty seconds with you, am I?”
Her head fell back against the window as he touched her softly, his thick work toughened fingers gently caressing her pussy lips. He separated her and pressed to slick over the tight nub at the apex of her mound. Blake touched his lips to the side of her neck, nipped at the tendon there then soothed it with a sweep of his tongue. He leaned in close to her ear and spoke just above a whisper.
“I was going to drive you straight home, but before we leave here you owe me something, Jaxi. You owe me for letting Jesse and Joel touch you and bring you pleasure in front of my eyes. So we’re going to stay here until you drop some more sweet honey on my fingers and you make more of those sweet sounds from your lips. You’re going to let me watch you come apart and it will be my hand that takes you there.”
His mouth descended again--hot and needy, demanding and incessant. He kissed her as his fingers stroked, circled, teased. Pressure built through her core, the uneasy balance of pleasurable tension and tingling ache. Blake rubbed her clit while his tongue delved into her mouth, twisting her emotions even as his hand twisted her senses into overload.
He pressed one long finger deep, swallowing the gasp of pleasure that escaped from her lips.
They stood in the shadows on the side of the lot, lights flicking past from the occasional vehicle. The glare of headlights faded to nothing as Blake continued, slow and even, to press into her sheath. She opened her legs more, instinctively trying to ease his passage, trying to let him farther into her aching core. The warm August air gusted around them, heat flowing over her skin, as his fingers continued to caress, the heel of his hand hard against her throbbing clit.
He matched the motion of his tongue and finger, his other hand supporting her neck to let him angle her head to the right position for maximum pleasure. He rubbed their bodies together, friction heating their passion.
Her core tightened, her breasts grew hot and aching as they pressed into his hard chest. Moisture fell from her body to slide along her thighs. Still he continued, his groin pressed hard against her leg letting her feel how much it affected him to touch her, feel her response.
He bit at her lips, dragged her body closer as he sped the pace of his thrusting hand and hips a bit. Jaxi cried out as the increase in stimulation possessed her, swept around her, swept over her, and propelled her over the edge.
Backblurb:
Welcome to the Six Pack Ranch, where one sweet young thing plus the Coleman boys equals trouble with a capital T.
Blake Coleman is old enough to know that acting on impulse causes nothing but a heap of trouble. But when trouble’s a blonde wearing a cowboy hat with slim legs that go on forever, what’s a man to do? Wanting the sweet girl next door is just wrong. Hell, he was the one that taught her to ride a horse and now all he can think about is riding her. The responsible thing to do is keep his hands off.
Jaxi has other plans for his hands, and his heart. She may have considered Blake a big brother once but that was a long time ago. She’s all grown up now and ready to convince him that she’s just what he’s been waiting for.
Add the complication of two sexy younger brothers who have suddenly noticed Jaxi and things heat up fast. Blake’s gonna have to decide if a little trouble is worth fighting for.
Happy Gay Friday & What I've Read
Wow, it’s Friday again. Time for some man on man love! Yay!
Isn't this a hot looking couple? *sigh*
Before I forget, let me remind you of the giveaway of Sloan Parker’s M/M/M romance here at my place. You can still go to Sloan’s guest post on POV here, to enter, until Monday night. I also have an M/F giveaway going on here, until tomorrow night.
Then my M/M reads. The past weeks have been quite good, m/m reading wise. I’ve read a few shorts (Ratchet by Chris Owen & Jodi Payne from their Deviations series and the free story Pineapples & Chocolate by E.M. Lynley) and I’ve read books 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the Bay City Paranormal Investigations series by Ally Blue. Now I have only book 7 from this series left and I find myself postponing reading this one because I don’t want to feel desperate for the release of book 8 (which is not known to be written yet and may not be written at all).
I want to review the books from this series in a separate post in the near future. At least the first five books, which are all centered on Sam and Bo’s love story. The sixth book is telling, their friend and colleague, Dean’s story and the seventh will be about Bo’s son Adrian, so they can both be read (and reviewed) as a standalone.
Like I said I took a little break from Ally Blue’s BCPI series and I did that with two books from authors who weren’t new to me: L.B. Gregg and Shayla Kersten. I’ve enjoyed their work before and they are both on my auto-buy list.
First I read Happy Ending by L.B. Gregg for the DIK Reading Challenge. I have to write a longer review for that but here’s my first impression of this second book of the Men of Smithfield series:
The opening scene is memorable and hilarious. Overall this was an enjoyable read although I didn't laugh out loud as much as I did with L.B. Gregg's other books. Still, Seth made me chuckle quite a lot and he's a rather refreshing character, with his gruffness and direct, short responses. He and David are an unusual and somewhat odd couple - talk about opposites attract - but the author succeeded in making me believe in their pairing. I thought the story ended at a point that their relationship started to get interesting and I found myself wishing the book had at least 50 more pages. My rate: 3.5 stars.
Backblurb:
All Seth really wanted was a simple massage—was that too much to ask? When his usual therapist is replaced by a sexy young masseur, Seth finds himself obsessed with the unpredictable - and wholly inappropriate - David Cooke. Pushed to the breaking point by forces both mysterious and not so mysterious, Seth must lose his rigid control to find the happy ending both he and David deserve.
Second I read Icing on the Cake by Shayla Kersten. My thoughts:
Although this is only 48 pages I really enjoyed this story! Okay, I wouldn't mind if it had been twice or three times as long, because that had probably satisfied my curiosity about this deliciously sexy couple. Jeff and Ollie are such interesting characters that I want to know more about them. Together they are incredibly hot. Jeff is a closeted, conservative, big shot business man and Ollie is a bold, tattooed and pierced biker kind of guy who bakes cakes for a living, and is very successful at that. Their attraction is an unlikely one but made very believable and tangible. They do a lot of hot stuff with icing and other food. And they rock each other's world very convincingly! I rate this with 4 stars.
Backblurb:
Jeff Morgan’s life is all about career. Relationships aren’t on his radar. His friendships are limited to a very few and his sex life consists of wham-bam-thank-you-man sexual encounters. He doesn’t do long term. He doesn’t even do breakfast.
Then the fate of a cake brings Ollie Cranford into his life. Shaved head, tats and piercings, the baker is far from Jeff’s type, but Ollie is as luscious as the treats he whips up in his bakery.
Now if only Jeff can relax long enough to enjoy the icing on the beefcake.
I also wanted to let you know that there's a wonderful post at Jessewave’s blog today about coming out that includes contributions from Ethan Day, Rick Reed, Sean Kennedy, John, Christian Otto, Batboy 126 and Ozakie Knotts. The contributions give a glimpse of the lives and personal experiences of these gay men who talk about “coming out” or choosing to remain in the closet.
Have a Happy Gay Friday!
One Author’s POV on POV: Guestpost & Giveaway with Sloan Parker
Today I’m very pleased that the wonderful Sloan Parker is my guest. She’s the author of the hot and fabulous gay ménage romance More, that you all know I loved! You can read my review here. Sloan will be talking about a topic that has me contemplating every once in a while, because like everyone else I have my likes and dislikes about it, as a reader. The topic is POV (point of view) in romances. I’m dying to hear about this from a writer’s POV. So, I’ll stop talking now and give Sloan the stage!
~~~~~~~~~~

Hello everyone! My name is Sloan Parker, and I’m a newly published romance author. Thanks to the lovely Janna for inviting me by her blog today and allowing me to share my thoughts on writing romances in both first and third person points of view (POV).

When I was writing the first draft of my current story, BREATHE (written in third person), I was also working with my editor on edits to my book MORE (written in first person). It was interesting to flip back and forth between the two types of viewpoints. Each POV has its own advantages and disadvantages for both the reader and the writer.

So today I thought I’d share some of what I like and dislike about writing in each.

Limited Third Person / Told from Multiple Alternating Viewpoints (Uses pronouns “he” or “she”)

What I like:
  • Multiple histories & life experiences. I like being able to explore more than one viewpoint of the events in a story. Each character looks at the world and interprets events and the actions of others differently.
  • Emotional journeys of all involved. In third person, I can more easily focus on the emotional journey of both (or all) of the main characters in the relationship.
  • Getting to the heart of the matter. By switching back and forth between the main characters, I can write each scene from the viewpoint of whichever character is most emotionally impacted by the events in that moment. There are some scenes in MORE where it would have been nice to get into Matthew’s or Richard’s head.
What I don’t like:
  • Those tricky little words “he” and “she.” Pronouns can be a headache for any writer, especially for scenes with two or more characters of the same gender. This is not just an issue for love scenes in m/m romances, but for any scene with multiple characters of the same gender. This can lead to awkward wording with repeated names or character descriptions in place of vague pronouns.
  • A stop to the tension. It can be hard to keep the tension going in third person when you are alternating viewpoints between characters. If one character is wondering what the other is thinking or feeling, the reader may already know and thus the tension is lessoned.
  • Too stupid to live. Often, the reader ends up with more information than the individual characters which can lead to one or more characters looking stupid or as if they should’ve “known better.”

First Person / Told from One Viewpoint (Uses pronouns “I” or “me”)

What I like:
  • A deeper connection. When writing as the narrator of the story (who also is “in” the story), I find it gives me a more immediate and personal connection to the main character.
  • Faster first draft. By putting myself in each scene as though I am the POV character, I can quickly slip into his head and the actions surrounding him. As a writer, I find this easier to achieve in first person.
  • He can be trusted. First person helps establish credibility for the main POV character. At no point in the story do we see that character’s actions without his viewpoint and thus are not as tempted to question his motivations.

What I don’t like:
  • What happened when he was sleeping (or unconscious or in the bathroom)? Writing in first means you are limited to only the immediate actions that the POV character is present for or what he/she is told by others.
  • He seems shifty. In first person, I worry that the reader may question the motives of the other characters whose thoughts they are not privy to, and this may not be the reaction I’m hoping for.
  • I don’t like him. First person (especially in novel-length works) can be a risky storytelling convention. The narrator needs to be likeable or at least interesting (he/she can have faults but cannot be boring or annoying). If the reader doesn’t like that character, then chances are they won’t connect with the book.
As a reader, I have liked and disliked romances written in both first and third person. It all depends on how the author executes the story and the characterizations.

So what do you think? I’d love to hear your likes and dislikes. Do you enjoy reading books told in first person, third, or both? Do you like stories told from one person’s viewpoint or all of the main characters in the romantic relationship?

Thanks again, Janna, for letting me share on your blog today. And thanks to your readers for dropping by and checking out my thoughts on POV.

~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you, Sloan! It was my pleasure to have you here today.
Giveaway:
Backblurb More:
For fifteen years Luke Moore has lived by three rules: stay off his father's radar, never spend more than a single night with any man, and never fall in love again. Richard and Matthew push him past all his boundaries—both sexually and personally—and now he’s no longer hiding from his senator father; he’s taking him on. Hot & Smutty Monday with Giveaway of Rocky Mountain Heat by Vivian Arend
Today is release day for Vivian Arend’s second book in her Six Pack Ranch series: Rocky Mountain Haven. And I have not only a delicious smutty scene from that installment to share with you, but also an ebook copy of the first book in this series, Rocky Mountain Heat, to give away, thanks to the author herself. Look at the end of this post to see how you can win.
Remember the sexy scene I shared with you a while ago from one of her werewolf books (Wolf Signs)? Ms. Arend also writes contemporary romances that are pretty hot, as the next smuttalicious scene shows. Enjoy!
"Oh sweet mercy, woman." He drew a finger down her torso as he knelt at her feet and her belly fluttered under his touch. He leaned closer and took a deep breath in through his nose. "I can smell your desire. You're wet, just thinking about what we're going to do, aren't you?"
Her legs trembled. "What are we going to do?"
His wicked grin flashed up at her. "I already told you. Non-vanilla. We've got forty five minutes left."
With one hand he separated the curls of her body, touching her slowly, his gaze never leaving hers. Again and again he circled a finger along the sensitive skin of her sex, her labia and her clit pulsing in time with her heart. A single finger slipped into her depths and he licked her clit and she moaned.
"You can make some noise, but no screaming, okay? I'll take you somewhere for the screaming sex another time."
"Jesus, Daniel, shut up already and...holy fuck." He bit her clit and the top of her head nearly blew off, it felt so damn good. Another finger joined the first and he stroked and teased her, inside and out now, his tongue moving rapidly against her throbbing clit. His fingers plunged into her faster and faster until there was no hope of holding back and her orgasm flashed like a wild fire. He slowed his strokes, drawing out the waves until she grasped his head and dragged him away from her now too sensitive center.
He rose and those eyes caught her in his spell. He stripped off his swim trunks and she swore at the size of him, his erection slamming into his belly as he stood. He pulled a condom from the towel on the counter, rolled it on and stepped closer.
"Daniel, how are we going to--"
He kissed her wildly, that massive cock caught between their bodies, the heat of it branding her belly. When he finally pulled away they both gasped for air.
"Fucking need to be inside you. Now."
"Yes, please...yes." She would have begged for longer but there was no need. Her desperation was reflected in his eyes as well. He stood her on her good leg and took hold of her injured one.
"Tell me if this hurts."
He lifted her thigh slowly, cautiously, watching her face the whole time. The angle took the pressure off the nerves that were usually pinched and sore and she nodded at him, tugging his hips to try and get him closer to where she needed him. "It's good, it's good. Oh God, now, please..."
He lined up the head of his shaft, nudging against her labia, slowly opening her up. He rocked his hips a few times, slipping against her and it felt so amazing she panted for air, clutching him to try and pull him farther in.
He clasped her chin with his free hand and as their eyes met, powered into her body.
Full.
Stretched apart.
Aching and wanting and--damn, it felt amazing. She watched his eyes flicker for a second before he dropped his forehead to hers. "That is about the hottest sensation I've ever felt. Oh fuck." He took a deep breath. "You good, darling?"
There was no way on earth she could speak. She nodded.
Slow, even, tortuous, wonderful. He withdrew, paused, then thrust in again. Her breath shot out as his cock rocketed in, and she clutched his shoulders, closing her eyes to let the sensations take control. Let him take control.
He filled her completely, his girth stretching her more than she ever remembered. Maybe it was the angle, maybe it was because they were both panting with desire. Maybe it was the fact that outside the door there were people innocently swimming laps but she'd never been so turned on before in her life. Every plunge rubbed spots inside that in turn lit nerves on fire in chain reactions throughout her body. Her breasts bounced as he rammed himself deep into her core, the broad expanse of his chest rubbing her now screamingly sensitive nipples on every stroke he delivered. Beth's world diminished to the sensory overload enclosed in the small chlorine scented space.
Everything moved in slow motion as she opened her eyes and gazed into his. He returned her stare, his dark pupils mesmerizing, his wicked, sinful grin breaking at the corner of his mouth.
"Fucking against the wall. You ever done this before? Feel the cold of the concrete behind you, feel the heat of my cock as I ream you in two. It's good, ain't it darling? All for you. Every succulent, desirable..." He slammed into her harder still and alarms went off in the back of her brain. This wasn't going to just be an orgasm; it was going to be cataclysmic. "...every fuckable inch of you."
Her climax drew closer, hovering just out of reach.
"Come for me again. I'm going to..." A deep-seated thrust. "...take you with me..." Another. "...you feel so fucking good squeezing my cock..." Another. "...come on, darling."
She came undone.
High Five, Low Five Review of More by Sloan Parker
Loose Id, March 2010
: Contemporary, M/M Romance, Ménage, Violence, Private vs Public Life, Politics
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Heat level:
3 out of 3 flames
I’ve read this romance for the M/M Reading Challenge, it’s a full length novel and I bought it as an ebook (my pdf has 245 pages). I don’t think it’s available as a paperback yet.
This is one of my High 5, Low 5 reviews. In general the High Five are five things that have impressed me or that I really enjoyed, and the Low Five are five things that had me shaking my head in a less admiring way. In this case the last ones were not really low, only a little lower than the High Five.
More is one of those books that surprised me and made me reconsider a few preconceptions I have about my own likes and dislikes. I’ll talk about a few of my usual dislikes under Low 5. And although I listed them under the low five, you’ll see that they’re not really dislikes here, somehow they worked for me in this book.
So, when I closed the book a content sigh came out of me. I loved it. Whenever that occurs, I feel the need to write a review about the book, but also know that when I would do that immediately after finishing the book, I have not much more to say than that the book is fabulous and a variety of those adjectives. Therefore, it took me a few weeks, but now I can give you my thoughts on this gay ménage.
First the Back Blurb:
For fifteen years Luke Moore has lived by three rules: stay off his father's radar, never spend more than a single night with any man, and never fall in love again. But one night of explosive sex and two men whom he can’t get out of his head have Luke breaking them all. Richard and Matthew push him past all his boundaries—both sexually and personally—and now he’s no longer hiding from his senator father; he’s taking him on. And he isn’t just falling for one man; he’s falling for two. If you're going to break the rules, might as well break them big.
But Luke’s father has his reasons for hating how his son lives, and he’ll do whatever he can and use all his power to keep Luke away from Richard and Matthew.
Can this threesome find a way to make their unconventional relationship last with the world around them trying to pull them apart? And will Luke be able to keep breaking his rules for Richard and Matthew, or will he head back to his familiar way of life just when his new lovers want to bind him tighter?
High 5
• Good writing style
If I hadn’t known that this was a debut novel, I would’ve never been able to tell. It’s written very well: with functional descriptions, no annoying mistakes, good dialogue and good visualization. Yes, even for me, a non-native speaker, it’s important that the language and writing style are good. Maybe even more so. I don’t want to get distracted or taken out of the story because of a bad sentence or a discontinuity in a description of a scene. So, I appreciate a well-written (and well-edited) story very much, also because this is not always the norm in this genre.
• Great build-up
Along with the first high, comes the second: the story has a good pace, the right amount of suspense and a natural feel to the relationship building. I like it that it’s not rushed and has the length of a novel.
• No taking a nosedive for this ménage
I’m rather picky when it comes to ménage romances because usually they only satisfy me in the erotic and not in the romance department. It’s quite tricky for an author to make the polyamorous relationship believable (for me). I seldom buy the ‘I love you’s that are exchanged at the end, just to give the book a HEA. Ms. Parker succeeds in making my romantic heart flutter for her three guys in More. And, like I said, that’s not an easy job. She lets the three men individually, at different moments and to other people, tell how they see the other two men in their lives. And for example when Richard talks about Luke and Matthew on page 188 I can understand how their relationship works (for them). He says: “The attraction and affection you see between them – it isn’t just about them. Wrapped up in that is me – their feelings for me.” The author worked hard with many other descriptions like this one and by showing their feelings within their behavior, before I became a ‘believer’, but she succeeded.
• Loveable & well-developed characters
Very important for me is how I feel towards the main characters. I know it’s probably the most subjective one of my criteria but I’m not the only reader for whom this is essential. It just makes it easier to keep reading. And I just happened to like Luke and Richard a lot and really love Matthew. His bouncing, happy persona was outright adorable. At least, that’s what I thought, someone else might disagree… But, they probably will agree that the characters were well-developed and showed some growth, especially Luke. He almost changed from black to white: from a loner to a dedicated lover, from submissive towards his dad’s demands to an ‘action hero’, from being secretive to a sharing person and from a guy on the run to a domestic man.
• Steamy sex scenes
You know me… and in case you don’t, I’ll say it out loud… I heart steamy, hot love scenes. And More absolutely delivered them. Nice, long sex scenes that left me sizzling. Also not unimportant, there was a lot of hot kissing going on. And maybe I like a good kiss scene even better than a sex scene but those two combined makes the best love scene. I hardly ever reread a book but I would reread More for them alone, and I think Mr. ErotRomReader won’t object if I do.
Well, the love scenes were not only hot but also showed a parallel development that was present in that of the relationship - or to be more precise Luke’s growth. It’s symbolic that he wants to be tied up the first time the three men meet and have sex, and Luke’s also the one who refuses to go bareback long after the two other men are ready for that kind of commitment. So, the sex scenes mirror the feelings in this relationship and play an important role in understanding each other. I love it when sex is functional like that *grin*.
Low 5
• The amount of sex
Okay, that being said, I have to make a comment on the amount of sex scenes, because it can be overwhelming. It wasn’t for me, because I read the book spread out over three or four days. But, I can imagine that it is, when you read the book in say one day. I like to add that the sex scenes never became repetitive at all. That’s an achievement in itself with that high quantity.
• Luke’s father’s influence
Luke’s father, the politician, has a slightly unbelievable hold on his son. I didn’t quite buy his behavior, perhaps it was a little over the top. But then, reality is probably weirder than fiction. Also Luke’s impassive attitude – always on the run, never confronting his father – rang a bit untrue. But this element in the story made for great suspense and was a perfect motivation for the pace the love story took. It didn’t bother me, but asked for a little suspension of disbelieve.
• The setting of the gay sex club
The gay sex club, where the three men meet in the beginning of the story, is not my favorite setting, usually. It’s so not romantic. Nevertheless, it was a very logical setting, not only for Luke (who avoided everything smelling like a committed relationship) but also for Richard and Matthew. Ms. Parker did explain well why they were there. Still, I was relieved when the club was left for what it was, after only a few meetings. The setting of Richard’s house was much better.
• Lack of a social life
Luke, Matthew and Richard don’t seem to have many friends or family. Richard’s social life consists only of his business meetings, Matthew just has his mother with whom he has a wonderful relationship for that matter. And Luke only has one good friend, an older ex-cop, who seems to be mainly a handy contact because of his security skills. I usually prefer there to be some meaningful relationships besides the love interest, but somehow I hardly missed it in this book. Probably because there already was so much going on with Luke’s investigation, the threats from his father, all the sex, the relationship issues, etcetera.
• The use of first POV
This story is told solely from Luke’s point of view, in first person. I always thought it’s not my favorite POV, but more and more of my five star reads, like this one, seem to be written in first POV (e.g. books from Sean Kennedy, L.B. Gregg and Josh Lanyon). Often it doesn’t work for me, but when it’s done well, it gives a book that little extra. I think it was a good choice for More, because with the three male characters it could’ve become awfully confusing with the changing POV’s and a disastrous case of head hopping. But, still, I put it under my Low Five, because I really missed Matthew’s and Richard perspective.
Ps: There are rumors that Ms. Parker is thinking about writing two sequels to More from Richard’s and Matthew’s POV
Ps2: I've invited Sloan Parker over to my place for next week. She’ll be talking about writing in first person and third person for romances (her next manuscript is in third from both character’s POV). She also generously offered to give away a copy of More, so check in next Wednesday if you want to know more about that.
Those were my five highs and five lows. Did you notice how my five lows weren’t really deal breakers? I guess it’s obvious then that I totally loved More! It was a very sexy and heartwarming love story with good suspense. I completely believed in the polyamorous nature of this relationship and especially Matthew found his way to a special little place in my heart. The story of Luke’s life is heartbreaking and I’m happy that he found a way out of it. More definitely made my Favorites of 2010 list. And I would be the first to buy a sequel from Richard’s or Matthew’s point of view.
Mondays Hot Couple & Sexy, Smutty Scene
This week’s sexy smutty scene is from What Hides Inside by Ally Blue. It’s the second book of her Bay City Paranormal Investigation series. I’ve finished this book last night and in a few hours I’ll start reading the third book Twilight. I don’t know what it is about this series but it’s pretty addictive. It’s m/m PNR but it’s not the vampire, demon or werewolf kind of paranormal. In this case it’s about a team of investigators that look into strange occurrences that seem to be paranormal. The investigation angle is attractive and addictive.
This week’s very smuttalicious man love scene might be a bit spoilerish when you just started this series or want to read it soon. So don’t read further if you don’t want to know (yet) :)
Oh, and it’s hot (maybe superfluous to mention)! Enjoy!
For a second, Dean went rigid with surprise. Then he moaned into Sam’s mouth and melted against him, one hand curled in Sam’s hair and the other winding around his waist. Dean’s body fit perfectly against Sam’s, warm and pliant, hips rolling in a search for friction. Hungry little noises bled from his lips as the kiss went deep.
“God, I want you so bad,” Dean breathed, and bit Sam’s ear.
Growling, Sam grabbed Dean’s ass in both hands and squeezed. “Don’t wanna go out anymore.”
“Me neither. Oh shit, yeah, do that again…”
Sam obediently sucked up another purple mark at the juncture of Dean’s neck and shoulder. “Bedroom,” he mumbled, his mouth still pressed to Dean’s skin. “Now.”
“Hell yeah.” With one more hard, hot kiss, Dean drew back, a finger still hooked through one of Sam’s belt loops. “Which way?”
Taking Dean’s hand, Sam led him through the door into the bedroom. As soon as they were inside, Sam tore off his jacket, watching as Dean did the same. Both garments were thrown unceremoniously aside, then Dean molded his body to Sam’s, hands sliding around his hips to caress his ass. They kissed again, tongues winding together as Sam backed them toward the bed. His knees hit the edge of the mattress and he let himself fall backward across it, taking Dean with him.
Rolling over, Sam pinned Dean’s body with his and buried his face in the man’s neck, pressing tiny kisses to his skin. Dean writhed underneath him, hips canting upward and thighs spreading. His moans rode the air, and his hands roamed Sam’s body with a great deal of skill and not an ounce of shyness.
Even through the lust fogging his mind, Sam couldn’t help comparing Dean to Bo. Kissing Dean, touching him and drawing those sweet sounds from him, was a very different experience from doing the same to Bo. Dean smelled different, he tasted different, the noises he made were different. And Dean threw himself into kissing Sam with an abandon Bo had never shown. Sam understood the why of it—Dean was out. Very, very out. Bo was not. Plus Bo valued control in every area of his life. Dean clearly shot from the hip more often than not.
I’ve never made Bo lose control like this, Sam thought mournfully, even as he yanked Dean’s shirt up and sucked one small pink nipple into his mouth. Dean arched against him, both hands fisted in his hair, soft keening sounds falling from his lips.
“Fuck me,” Dean begged, his voice low and rough. “Fuck me, God please.”
Sam closed his eyes. He’d have given anything to hear Bo say that to him. But you never will, he reminded himself. Dean’s here, he’s hot and willing and expects nothing from you, and God knows you need a good fuck.
Shoving the wistful thoughts of Bo firmly to the back of his mind, Sam sat up on his knees and went to work getting Dean’s jeans undone. Once he had the button and zipper open, Dean toed his sneakers off, lifted his hips and helped Sam shimmy the tight denim down his legs.
Tossing the pants over his shoulder, Sam pushed Dean’s thighs apart and stared at the thick, straight cock and tight balls he’d uncovered.
“I like how you’re looking at me,” Dean whispered. He ran his fingertips up and down his shaft, making the silky skin twitch. “Get undressed, so I can look at you too.”
Without taking his gaze from Dean’s prick, Sam stood and hastily shed his clothes, then crawled back onto the bed. Dean wrapped Sam in strong arms and long, graceful legs. Their lips met in another searing kiss. The feel of Dean’s bare skin against his sent lust thumping through Sam’s blood.
Following a sudden, irresistible urge, Sam kissed his way down Dean’s neck, pausing to swirl his tongue in the hollow of Dean’s throat before moving on. Dean cried out and squirmed as Sam’s teeth dug into one nipple, his fingers pinching the other.
“Sam, yes,” Dean hissed, his skin jumping under Sam’s lips and teeth and tongue. “God…fuck…”
Sam could only groan his agreement, his mouth being busy with making Dean incoherent. He slid further down Dean’s body, leaving wet kisses and reddened bite marks on the way. When he caught the sharp, musky scent of Dean’s arousal, all his control vanished. Shoving Dean’s thighs up and apart, Sam swooped down and swallowed Dean’s flushed and leaking cock to the root.
“Ah, oh my God!” Dean cried, his upper body coming completely off the bed. “Yes, fuck yes.”
Sam smiled smugly around his mouthful. He’d been half afraid he’d forgotten how to drive a man crazy with his mouth, after two months of not being allowed to even consider it. Apparently he hadn’t lost his touch after all, if Dean’s broken, lustful moans and the persistent thrusting of his hips was anything to go by.
Sam licked and sucked and stroked until Dean was thrashing on the bed, legs splayed wide and hands clutching the sheets. When he felt Dean’s cock swell in his mouth, Sam abruptly drew back. Raising his head, he grinned at Dean’s shocked expression. Dean let out a pitiful whimper and pushed at Sam’s head.
“Don’t come yet,” Sam said, struggling to get the words out past the need filling him to bursting. “Wait ‘til I’m in you.”
